Biological and immunological characterization of Escherichia coli O157 : H7 cytotoxin

Abstract: Faecal samples were collected from diarrhoeic calves and adult cattle from 2 farms in Kafr El- sheikh Governoratev from which haemorrhagic colitis cases were associated The samples were exaimined for the presence of E coli O157 H7 which was isolated from one (1.1%) out of 90 calves and 2 (2.3) out of 85 adult cattle All E. coli O157 : H7 isolates from diarrhoeic bovine were verotoxin producers, this result appeared to indicate that verotoxin may play a role in bovine diarrhoea Intragastric administration of verotoxin alone in weaned rabbits was capable for causing severe diarrhoea verotoxin was detected in luminal contents of the mid colon verotoxin has lethal effect to mice and LD 50 varied from 60 to 75 ug protein After immunization with verotoxin rabbits showed an increase in antibody titers to verotoxin by ELISA as well as specific antiserum to the toxin neutralized completely theses toxins activities
