A comparison between Baladi black and APRI rabbits in litter and fertility traits as affected by season of the year and parity

Abstract: Data of 2488 litters, 1704 APRI and 784 Baladi Black (BB) rabbits were analyzed to compare both lines for litter traits; litter size at birth (LSB), litter born alive (LSA), litter weight at birth (LWB), litter size at 21 days of age (LS21), litter weight at 21 days of age (LW21), litter size at weaning (LSW) and litter weight at weaning(LWW), as well as, fertility traits; kindling interval (KI), gestation length (GL), number of services per conception (NSC). Fixed effects of breed, year-season and parity were included in the model which had significant effects on most traits. Linear contrasts were estimated as the difference between values of the lines (APRI vs. BB), parities (1st vs the rest) and year season (winter vs the rest). Linear contrasts between two lines showed significant (P<0.05) superiority of APRI line over BB rabbits in all traits. On other hand, performance variation of APRI line among seasons evidenced more adaptive of BB breed with Egyptian condition.
The current results suggest using APRI then BB as an adapted line with better performance in Egypt. Moreover, resumption of the genetic improvement programs in BB rabbit to improve their performances is recommended. .
