Chicken performance in the context of family poultry production system in Al-Sharkia governorate, Egypt

Abstract: A longitudinal data collection (repeated surveys) and a cross sectional surveys were conducted in twenty-four villages in three districts in Al-Sharkia Governorate, which is located in the north eastern region of Egypt. This study aimed to use systems approach to evaluate the performance of rural chicken and some of economic indicators under family poultry production system. Using a systematic random sampling technique, one hundred and thirty-five households were randomly selected in the survey. According to flock size family poultry production system; divided into two sub-systems: small-scale and medium-scale. , The results showed that, the family poultry production system (small-scale and medium scale systems) in the studied' area was based on indigenous chickens. The annual average egg production was 79 eggs in small-scale system and 120 eggs in medium-scale system.
The chickens under the medium, scale system were heavier.( 1.16 kg and. to 1.34 kg for hens and cocks, respectively) than the small-scale system (1.05 kg and 1.23 kg for hens and cocks, respectively). The study revealed that, chickens under the small-scale system reached sexual maturity later
(188 days) than those under the medium-scale system (163 days). The total variable costs per bird per year are more in the medium-scale than in the small-scale system. It reached about 42.89 and 25.44 LE for both systems, respectively. The measures of economic efficiency showed that the medium-scale. system was more efficient since the gross margin was equal to 51.06 LE as compared to 42.14 LE for the small-scale system.
