NITROGEN USE EFFICIENCY AND ORGANIC FERTILIZER EFFECTS ON MAIZE PRODUCTIVITY

Abstract: A field trials were conducted at two Research Stations of Ismailia (sandy soil) and Gemmiza (alluvial soil), to find out the impact of four humic acid (HA) treatments applied by different methods [(1) control, (2) soaking seeds in humic acid 1000 ppm for 24 hrs before planting, (3) spraying humic acid 1000 ppm at 21 days after planting, and (4) soaking seeds in humic acid 1000 ppm for 24 hrs before planting + spraying humic acid 1000 ppm at 21 days after planting)] under four nitrogen fertilizer levels (0, 60, 90 and 120 Kg/fed) on maize grain yield and yield attributes with split plot design in three replicates during two successive summer seasons of 2012 and 2013 on maize crop hybrid single cross 166.
Humic treatments and N rates used in this experiment showed a significant effect on grain yield and its components in two locations. On other hand, Gemmiza results had higher values than Ismailia. Locations and seasons indicated that grain yield increased with higher N rates; moreover, these results suggest that adequate N rate was 120 kg N fed-1 in Ismailia and Gemmiza. The 4th treatment (soaking seeds in humic acid 1000 ppm for 24 hrs before planting + spraying humic acid 1000 ppm at 21 days after planting) recorded the highest values for yield and most of its traits (ear length, kernels weight, kernels per ear, and grain yield) at the two locations over both seasons. Generally grain yield increased as N increased to120 kg fed-1 with soaked/sprayed seed in two locations. This implies maize productivity that improved in sandy soil (Ismailia) by using 4th treatment (Soaking/Spraying) to reach Gemmiza productivity without humic,
Application increasing nitrogen rates decreased NUE in maize at Gemmiza because the increase in `grain reduced for each increment of N application at all humic treatments. Results confirmed that grain yield response index in Gemmiza than Ismailia.
