EXTRACTION, MODIFICATION AND BLENDING OF CHITOSAN WITH OTHER NATURAL POLYMERS

Abstract: This work deals with Extraction of chitin from six local sources in Egypt the obtained chitin was converted into the more useful soluble chitosan, the obtained chitin and chitosan were characterized by elemental, spectral and thermo gravimetric analysis, and x-ray diffraction. Modification of chitosan and chitin was made by preparing carboxymethyl chitosan and carboxymethyl chitin. Non woven polypropylene and cotton fabrics were subjected to plasma pretreatment then dipped into chitosan, carboxymethyl chitosan and carboxymethyl chitin solution. The antimicrobial activity of these treated samples was then evaluated and was found to be profoundly enhanced. Polypropylene film obtained from the local market were treated with corona discharge machine, then dipped into chitosan, carboxymethyl chitosan and carboxymethyl chitin solution, another treatment of PP film with chitosan and pectin was made to form multilayer on the film. The antimicrobial activity of these treated samples was then evaluated
