| Objectives |
- To provide an effective contact between researchers and buffalo raisers and transfer
the results of research for application with those raisers.
- To enhance buffalo productivity at the national level, through improving its performance
at different raisers categories that raise about as 95 % of the buffalo population
in Egypt.
- To implement field service campaigns (reproductive examination and therapy, artificial
insemination and parasite treatment); as well as extension campaign (for animal
husbandry, breeding and nutrition).
- To organize series of workshops with participation of breeders to discuss different
problems and constraints of their animal farms.
- To carry out feasibility studies for the projects and enterprises in the areas of
milk and meat production to help new investors increase their return from such activities.

| Future Prospects |
- Improving the knowledge and skills of buffalo raisers (small to medium and from
medium to large scale raisers). This will lead to improving the production levels,
consequently increase market supply from animal products (dairy and meat).
- Establishing cooperative working relations with the corresponding centers and institutions
abroad.
- Assist in establishing a strict recording system at the national level for buffalo
herds and implementing genetic evaluation of sires through the progeny testing.

- Collect data and information that serve the aims of the ARC’s Institutes and Laboratories
as well as those of the Ministry of Agriculture’s affiliated bodies.
- Record, analyse, organize, update and Categorize data and information besides offering
the microfilm documentation service of such data and information in order to enhance
the policy making process.
- Provide technical assistance to detect the illegal constructions on the agricultural
lands, based on the 1985 air survey of Egypt’s farm lands and populous mass.
- Document the reports submitted by delegates from MALR following completion of out-of-country
missions.

Conditions In Private/ Public Sectors”, published in 1992 and 1995.
- Submitted in 1993 a detailed Study on "Manpower in Agricultural Research in Egypt".
- Carried Out, in 1994, a study on "The Financial Sources of Agricultural Research".
- Data retrieval system for mission abroad and the subsequent reports submitted by
MALR’s delegates since 1987.
- Translated and published of an Arabic version of the UN Codex Alimentarius Commission
reports [ALINORM].
- The microfilm documentation and the basic data & information keeping/retrieving
system of the Egypt Urban Zone maps comprising all the earlier land area maps (about
30000 maps) of 16 Egyptian Governorates.
- Published an information bulletin comprising the most important report resumes submitted
by the Egyptian delegates.
- Established a retrievable system for the 1996 Census of the Agricultural Research
Center's Manpower.
- Established a retrievable system for the third Five - year plan (1992-1997) of the
ARC programs.

- Publishing the "Mission" information bulletin comprising the most important report
resumes submitted by Egyptian delegates.
- Publishing of the scientific Arabic Translation bulletin of the UN Codex Alimentarius
Commission reports [ALINORM].
- Offering data and Information about researchers and delegates experiences and the
urban zone maps to decision makers based on the submitted reports and flowcharts.
- Providing urban map service to the local units and city councils at the different
Governorates by offering a collection of maps of the population mass distribution
at such units.
- Carrying –out a comprehensive statistical study of the ARC's Manpower including
Research and support staff.

The Information & Documentation Center is seeking to;
- Update the Agricultural sector manpower data.
- Contribute under the signed Protocol with the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities
to the illustration of the archeological locations at Egypt area maps.
- Continue to assist in the work of the urban zone committees and the Public Authority
Of The Urban Planning based on 1985 air survey of the Egyptian urban zone.

- Develop and release new rice varieties and hybrids, characterized by being early
mature, disease and insect resistant, with tolerance to adverse conditions (salinity,
drought and high temperature).
- Produce high quality breeder and foundation seeds for all rice commercial varieties
and supervise registered seeds.
- Optimize cultural practices (package of technology) for new rice varieties and hybrids
to increase their productivity.
- Develop integrated pest management (weeds, diseases and insects) technology to minimize
yield losses.
- Technology transfer to farmers through demonstration fields, verification trials,
field days and train extension workers and pioneer farmers on this packages technology.
- Enhance the capability of the rice researchers through national and international
training, scientific exchange, and attending local and international conferences.
- Design and implement extension and training programs for extension agents and farmers
in collaboration with the Central Administration for agricultural extension.
- Carryout training programs for African countries in collaboration with international
agencies.

- Increase and sustain rice productivity and competitiveness through: improving and
renewing the genetic resources to improve the agronomic and yield characters, disease
and insect resistance and utilizing biotechnology and innovative breeding methods
to increase rice yield and quality.
- Cooperate with Egyptian universities, national and international research centers
in the area of research findings and genetic materials.
- Increase saline soil productivity through: release high-yielding rice varieties
and hybrids tolerant to adverse conditions.
- Strength the cooperation among researchers, extension agents, and farmers through
training and technology transfer.
- Encourage the innovative research for improving productivity, grain quality, plant
nutrition, and water efficiency.
- Improve the researcher’s efficiency through training, study tours, and participation
in the national and international conferences.

| Current Activities |
The main objective of maize and sorghum research, extension and training center
(MSRETC) at Gemmeiza is to increase the national production average of both sorghum
and maize from 24.3 and 17.35 ardab/feddan respectively (2002 season) to 28.0 and
20.0 ardab/feddan, during the next five years to bridge the gap between local production
and consumption of these two crops. This target can be attained over the coming
five years through establishing the following components:
- Breeding Component:
Developing new white and yellow inbreds and hybrids with high yield performance.
These new hybrids are characterized by better resistance to different diseases,
insects and other environmental stresses through the use of new genetic resources
and biotechnology techniques.
- Agronomy Component:
The main objective of agronomy component is to improve the agricultural practices
and conduct more physiological studies to develop new recommendations suitable for
old and new lands through the use of biofertilizers and manures under different
irrigation systems.
- Diseases and Insects Research Component:
This component aims at incorporating genetic factors controlling disease resistance
and insect tolerance into the new germplasm (inbreds and hybrids) using both traditional
breeding methods and biotechnology procedures.
- Weed Control Research Component:
Developing the best mechanical and chemical methods and techniques for weed control
to reduce yield losses due to harmful competition between weeds and the growing
crop.
- Seed Production Component:
It aims at producing breeder and foundation seed of the new inbreds and hybrids
to meet all seed requirements of the national program, private seed companies and
the Central Administration For Seed Production.
- Technology Transfer and Extension Component:
To improve farmer’s adaptability to the new technical recommendations of both crops
and the follow up of their implementation.
- Crop Economics Research Component:
To conduct different economic studies for running costs, cash return, and feasibility
studies of research projects and also preparation of statistical data of the Research
Center.
- Training Component:
In and out-of-country training for researchers and support staff in the field of
breeding, agronomy . . . etc. Also, training agricultural extension agents at different
governorates on the application of the crop technical package of recommendations.

practices through technology transfer actvities from land preparation to harvesting.
- Training extension agents and distinguished farmers on the new agricultural practices
to enhance their knowledge. Likewise, training seed multiplication specialists on
how to identify commercial cultivars.
