التصد ى لعوامل تدهور الآراضي المنزرعة نتيجة التغيرات المناخية المؤثرة سلبا على انتاجيتها وتخفيف تلك الآثار السلبية على كل من التربة والنبات والمحافظة على انتاجيه الأرض واستدامتها من خلال اقامه البحوث التطبيقية بهدف تحسين وصيانة الآراضي المنزرعة. ودراسة انسب وسائل خدمة التربة والمحافظة على انتاجياتها. كذلك دراسة انسب طرق معالجة الأراضي المتدهورة لرفع انتاجيتها (المتأثرة بالأملاح).

إن التحديات التي تواجه الأراضي المصرية في هذه الآونة من تدهور الأراضي وانخفاض إنتاجيتها مثل زياده الجفاف والتمليح او التلوث والتي ترتبط ارتباطا وثيقا بالتغيرات المناخية الأنية او سوء إدارة الأرض والمرتبطة بتطبيق ممارسات غير صحيه سواء من الإسراف في استخدام الأسمدة والمبيدات أومن عدم استخدام أساليب الري المطورة مما يشكل عبأ كبيرا على العلماء والباحثين المهتمين بالتصدي لهذه التحديات ورفع الحديه الإنتاجية لوحده الأرض والمياه والمنوط بها قسمنا العريق والذى هو أحد الأقسام العريقة بالمعهد منذ ستينيات القرن الماضي والذى يهتم بتحسين خواص التربة الكيميائية والطبيعية والحيوية من خلال تقيم إضافة محسنات عضويه او غير عضويه تقليديه او غير تقليديه غير مكلفه وصديقه للبيئة .كذلك مقاومه كل أسباب تدهور الآراضي من الملوحة والقلوية والجفاف والتلوث سواء كان عضويا او معدنيا بالإضافة الى تحسين إنتاجيه تلك الأراضي في الظروف الطبيعية او الظروف القاسية من زياده الملوحة والقلوية والجفاف وندره المياه .كما يهتم القسم بصيانه وخدمه تلك الأراضي المنزرعة التي تم رفع انتاجيتها للمحافظة على المستوى الذى تم الوصول اليه باستخدام بعض الوسائل التقليدية والتكنولوجية الحديثة.
انجازات القسم:
حرص القسم على إقامة العديد من الرسائل العلمية والبحوث التطبيقية ونشرها في الدوريات والمجلات الدولية والمحلية بهدف
• تحسين وصيانة الأراضي المنزرعة.
• دراسة انسب وسائل خدمة التربة والمحافظة على انتاجياتها.
• دراسة انسب طرق معالجة الأراضي المتدهورة لرفع انتاجيتها (المتأثرة بالأملاح -الملوثة عضويا او معدنيا).
• اقامه بحوث عن تأثير الميكنة على خواص التربة.
• التطلع لاستخدام تكنولوجيا النانو في تحسين وصيانة الأراضي.
قدم القسم أيضًا ندوات ومحاضرات للأخصائيين والمزارعين المستثمرين حول محددات الاستثمار الزراعي في الأراضي حديثه الاستزراع وغيرها
كما حرص القسم على:
• استخدام تكنولوجيا حديثة لمعالجه الأراضي المتدهورة وخصوصا الملوثة والمتأثرة بالأملاح
• استحداث محسنات تربة صديقه للبيئة وتقيمها واستخدامها لرفع انتاجية الأراضي.
• اقامه قاعدة معلومات لبحوث تحسين وصيانة الاراضي.
• عمل كتيب يجمع البحوث التي نفذت في القسم خلال العشرين سنه الماضية (جارى اعداده)
