Dr. Rabab Elamawi is a distinguished Egyptian plant pathologist and Head of the Rice Pathology Department located at the Rice Research and Training Centre (RRTC), Sakha. She earned her BSc and MSc in Agricultural Science from Tanta University before obtaining a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France, in 2005.
Her research focuses on integrated disease management for rice, with particular emphasis on blast, brown spot, and Bakanae diseases. She is a pioneer in applying nanotechnology to plant protection, successfully synthesizing silica, silver, and zinc oxide nanoparticles as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional fungicides. Her work also incorporates molecular techniques for pathogen identification and supports the development of disease-resistant rice varieties, including Sakha 107, Sakha 108, and Giza 183.
Dr. Elamawi has held academic positions in Saudi Arabia at King Khalid University and King Saud University. She has supervised several graduate theses and published 28 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals.
In recognition of her scientific leadership, she was nominated in 2025 as a member of the CIHEAM Advisory Board.
Fluent in Arabic, very good in English, and French, she actively contributes to international collaborations with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Africa Rice Centre, and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Through her research, mentorship, and dedication to sustainable agriculture, Dr. Elamawi continues to make significant contributions to food security and rice production in Egypt and beyond.
