The Rural Community Development Research Department is one of the departments established in the Agricultural Economics Research Institute in 1990, and it is the sixth in department of establishment within the institute’s departments, the Agricultural Economics Research Division, which includes 9 departments.
Rural Community Development Research Department includes three research units:
- Rural Development in Old Land.
- Rural development in New Reclaimed Land.
- Research Unit for Agricultural Systems Development.

Rural Community Development Research Department is responsible for conducting studies and research in the following areas:
* Social development in all rural, desert and coastal areas and the processes by which collective change is intended and desired in building society and its function and in the attitudes of individuals and groups towards themselves and towards society to achieve integration between economic, social and agricultural development in accordance with the concept of comprehensive rural development.
* Collecting basic data related to the monitoring and evaluation of agrarian reform and rural development in Egypt in all fields such as (income, spending, health, education, housing, community service provision, rural social organizations, self-sufficiency in food production, family planning, energy, rural industrialization. ..etc).
* The issuance of an introductory abstract of studies and research related to the development of the rural community, its classification, intensification and indexing. This volume is published under the title "A Bibliography Explaining Studies and Research Related to the Development of Rural Society" as a periodic annual publication.
