The Agricultural Economics Research Institute started as a department in the Ministry of Agriculture 45 years ago and then changed its name to the Department of Agricultural Economics and Legislation. It consists of three units: the Agricultural External Relations Unit, the Statistics Unit, and the Agricultural Economics Unit. Then he changed into the Department of Agricultural Economics and Statistics in 1958. As the demand for the services of the Ministry of Agriculture increased during the 1960s, this section was divided into 8 sub-units, one of which is the Land Economics Unit, and on October 7th, Republican Decree No. (2425) was issued in 1971 to establish the Agricultural Research Center. The Agricultural Economics Research Institute has become one of the research institutes in this center. The Land Economics Unit turned into the Land Economics Research department.

The Land Economics Research Department includes three research units:
- Land and water economics
- Economics of land reclamation and cultivation.
- The economics of agrarian reform.

The Department's Specializations: The department is concerned with conducting the following studies and researches:
- Land tenure and associated ownership, rent, credit and taxes.
- Economic classification of lands and studying the reasons for low land productivity and the economics of its improvement.
- Study financial systems of land reclamation, maintenance, use, reclamation and cultivation costs, aiming at identifying priorities, methods and optimal systems.
- Evaluation of reclamation projects before and after implementation.
- Agricultural reform system existing in Egypt and abroad, evaluate the current system and propose the economic foundations for agricultural reform.
