Future Activities
1- Increasing productivity and production of different crops by 20-25% by 2017 to face population increase; and improving crop quality to compete well in international markets, through:
· Use of modern technologies and biotechnology to develop and release varieties and hybrids.
· Renovation of genetic resources to improve agronomic, yield, and technological traits for different crop varieties.
· Continuous collaboration with national and international research centers.
2- Improving productivity of saline and newly reclaimed lands, through:
· Release of high-yielding varieties and hybrids with special agronomic traits such as adaptability to adverse conditions (salinity, drought and heat) to be cultivated in such lands.
· Improving cultural practices and water management techniques to maximize yield in such lands.
· Issuing a varietal description of various field crops using morphological and biochemical characters, determining the standard varieties of different field crops according to international rules, applying modern technologies for detecting transgenic and non-transgenic seed, and, upgrading seed quality evaluation, seed processing and storage.
3- Crop intensification, soil fertility, irrigation water management through:
· Developing new crop rotations and cropping patterns to maximize yield from unit area.
· Developing new farming systems to maximize benefits from time factor.
4- Developing research activities depending on national research programs for all crops and accelerating collaboration with research components for each crop, in relation to other crops.
5- Collaborating with farmers and local research agencies to achieve the strategies that increase production and productivity and conserve natural resources (land, water and environment).
6- Upgrading researchers efficiency through training, scientific visits and sharing in local and international conferences.
