According to the MOA and ARC policy in scientific research development fields, also to support the agriculture development in the new reclaimed lands and rain fed areas, the idea of establishing the first specialized center in camel studies and production development became urgent.
The ministerial decision to establish the camel research department (no.1519/1998). Prof. Dr. Omar Salama was assigned as the first director of this department in 1998. After that the first experimental farm for camel researches was established in 2000, which was developed into the camel studies and production development center according to the ministerial decision (no. 3200/ 2002). This center was well prepared with constructions and basic facilities such as laboratories (analysis - dairy), lecture room and two bed rooms for researchers and trainers.
The role of Camel research department is developing strategies to promote the production of camel population in Egypt, especially after increasing the imported camels which represent 10 % of the slaughtered animals in the official slaughterhouses in Egypt.
