Breeding Program
Genetic resources
Bulbs of 38 foreign strains , 11 local lines and 19 foreign hybrids at different segregated generations were harvested.Seed of 23 foreign nucleus , 9 local lines and 7 foreign cultivars in isolated plots were harvested.
Onion Hybrid
Bulbs of two male sterile lines and seed of two isolated plots (A- Line) and their correspondent fertile lines ( B- Line ) to maintain the sterility character were harvested . These lines are selected from Kerdasy and New valley onion local strains. Seed of four crosses between A-line and 4 good nuclei in isolated plots were harvested.
Composites:
Bulbs of 15 selected composites, harvested. These composites have desirable characters as: early maturity, suitability for bulb production from sets, and direct seed as campsite 4 and 16. Composites 13,8 ,16 and 4 are characterized by high yield, lower doubles and bolters, and high percentage of T.S.S. , they are suitable for exportation and dehydration.
Composite El-Bustan and composite group can be planted successfully in the new lands, and they are suitable for biological production.
Seed of 12 composites were harvested.
Breeding for disease resistance
Breeding program is established to produce selected nucleus from Giza 6 Mohassan resistant to downy mildew and purple blotch diseases. Breeding program is established to produce varieties resistant to pink root diseases which infect onion roots in new lands.
One cultivar Giza 6 Mohassan DMR was planted for bulb production.
Two isolated bulks from Giza 6 Mohassan DMR were planted for seed production
Breeding to develop early maturity
Selection of varieties and lines for early maturity, uniform bulb shape, scale retention and high keeping quality, was carried out.
The bulbs of nuclei 2 E.E.Y.B, 2 Asiout globe E.M., 4 Composite 16, 2 Ori Yellow 1 Beth alpha, 1 El- Sabeeny and 2 Shandweel 1 Seed of nuclei Shandaweel 1, Asiout Globe E.M. , Composite 16 and Ori Yellow were harvested.
Breeding for white varieties (Scales & Flesh)
Giza white, a new variety was registered in 2005.Ten foreign lines, 6 local lines and one line of Giza 20 white were harvested. Five foreign varieties, two local lines in isolated plots were harvested. These lines are characterized by excellent qualitative and quantitative characters
Breeding to develop long keeping quality
Sever selection program to high keeping quality and high percentage of T.S.S. was established since several years in Onion Research Section.
Some genotypes as Behairy no pink, Beahiry 1866, Desert dehydrator, Comp 16, Asiout Globe early mature and two varieties i.e. Giza 6 Mohassan, Giza 20 are all high keeping quality.
Breeding for onion production from Sets
Bulbs from sets of 26 local and foreign strains were harvested.
Bulbs from sets of composites, 14, 17, 9 and 4 were harvested.
Sets of compites.4, 16, 16 white, and Comp. El-Bustan, were harvested.
