Effect of sulphur and nitrogen fertilization on growth and yield of seasame crop

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted on a sandy soil at El-Ismailia Agric. Res. station, Egypt to study the effect of sulphur and nitrogen, as well as, their interaction between them on plant growth characters, crop yield and yield components of seasame (Giza 25) varity. The experiment was comprised 16 treatments which consisted of four rates of both S (0, 500, 1000 and 1500 kg/fed.) and four rates of n (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg/fed.). Obtained data indicated that the diferent rates of S and n fertilizers display an effective role on plant growth, yield and seed quality. As for sulphur applications done showed a significant increase for plant growth, yield and its components up to 1000 kg S/fed. However, a higher rate of S did not showed any combination with nitrogen enhanced plant growth and yield much more.
Also, nitrogen applications showed a more pronounced effect for increasing the crop yield and its com[ponents when compared with S applications alone. Superior effects on yield and its components were obtained when nitrogen and sulphur were applied at the rate of 40 kg N and 1000 kg S per feddan. As for seed quality of seaSAM, It was found that protein content in seed was not only increased consistently as a result of individual application of S or N, but also due to their combination. Moreover, a significant increase in oil seed content was observed as a result of successive additions of S. On the contrast the oil content in seed was decreased gradually with increasing N rates.
