Improving root zone stratum by tile drainage system in salty clay soils, north delta, Egypt

Abstract: : Drainage plays a vital role in improving and conserving soil environment. Salty clay soil is fond mainly in the northern part of Egypt. This work was done at a new reclaimed soil, El-Hamoul area, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate in order to evaluate the effect of tile drainage system (in January 2010, a tile drainage system was executed with 30 and 40 m drain spacing at 140 cm soil depth using plastic pipe) on some hydrological and physic-chemical soil properties as well as on crops productivity during two years 2011and 2012.
The results indicated that water table depth is positively affected by drainage system. The highest values of water draw-down rate were recorded in 30 m drain spacing treatment. Soil bulk density and total porosity was relatively improved by installed tile drainage system. Soil pH, total soluble salts, soluble ions and ESP values were decreased as a result of tile drainage system performance. This trend was more evident in the surface layers for 30 m drain spacing treatment especially, after the second year. The crop productivity of cotton, wheat, rice, maize and sugar beet was increased after existing of tile drainage system. These increases were more obviously in the narrow drain spacing especially after the second year
