Farmers' knowledge and implementationneeds of Onion production and marketing in some villages of Qena Governorate

Abstract: The research aimed at identifying the level of knowledge andimplementation needs of farmer's respondents regarding Onion production and marketing recommendations, to identify the barrier facing Onion farmers and how they dealt with it, and their suggestions to improve the extension services in this regard.
The research was conducted using a systematic random sample amounted to 191 respondents, who were selected from four of the largest villages on the basis of the area cultivated with Onion, these villages were: Abu-amuri and Alkmanh villages from Nag Hammadi district, and Belad Al-mal Keply and AL-karnak villages from Abu Tesht district. Data were collected by personal interview using a questionnaire during January 2016.
The data were tabulated and analyzed statistically using arithmetic mean, standard deviation and the percentage of the average.
The main results were as follows:
- The level of knowledge needs of the respondents' concerning Onion production and marketing recommendations was low in general, where the percentage of the total average degrees rated to 24.9%.
- The level of implementation needs of the respondents' concerning Onion production and marketing recommendationswas moderate, where the percentage of the total average degrees rated to 54.4%.
- The major barrier mention by75.9%of the respondents, was the unavailabilityand high price of seeds. Farmers overcamethis by dealing with trusted seed suppliers and trusted nurseries, and buying their needs in installments as mentioned by 41.9%.
- Untrusted seedlings barrier was mentioned by 59.2% of the respondents. 29.8% of farmers referred to the nursery of the Ministry of Agriculture orExperimentalStations related toResearch Centers as trusted source of seedlings to deal with.
- The barrier of inability to buy input supplies was mentioned by 57.6% of the respondents. That was solved by buying their needs from supply traders in return of a part of production as pointed out by 40.3% of them.
- The main suggestion mention by94.9% of the respondents regarding the recommended extension activities was tolaunching extension convoys to raisethe awareness ofthe technical recommendations ofOnionproduction.
- The main suggestion mention by 64.1%of respondents was to develop knowledge and skills of farmers by raising their awareness about trusted sources of production supplies.
- The main suggestion mention by 98.7%of respondents regarding general support of Onion production was to establish a factory for driedOnions to contain overproduction of the crop.
