Farmers' Exposure to Agricultural Publications, Radio and TV Agricultural Programs in Some Villages of Monofia and Fayoum Governorates

Abstract: This study aimed to: determine the differences among the exposure of farmers to Agricultural publications; radio and TV agricultural programs in each of Monofia and Fayoum Governorates; define the differences between the two Governorates' farmers regarding exposure to Agricultural publication, radio and TV agricultural programs, as well as defining the contribution ratio of the studied independent variables that explain the variance in the exposure of farmers to agricultural publications, radio and TV agricultural programs.

Monofia Governorate was chosen to represent a modernized rural community in lower Egypt, while Fayoum Governorate was chosen to represent a traditional rural community in Upper Egypt. El-Bagour district from Monofia and El-Fayoum district from Fayoum were chosen randomly. Five Villages from each district were selected randomly also. Two random samples of 200 farmers (100 from each district) were drawn randomly representing 20 farmers for each village. Personal interview using a questionnaire was used to collect data from mid October till the end of December 1998. Tables, averages, weighted mean, percentages, standard deviation. Chi square, Contingency coefficient, simple correlation coefficient and Step Wise were used to present and analyze the data statistically.

The results of the study revealed that:
1- The opinion of the two samples' respondents agreed in their weighted mean that TV agricultural programs ranks first followed by Radio agricultural programs, while the publication came last.
2- Exposure degree differed between the two governorates, as Monofia farmers surpassed their peers in Fayoum regarding agricultural publications, while the opposite was detected regarding Radio agricultural programs. Moreover, The degree of exposure was almost the same regarding the TV agricultural programs.
3- Educational level of Monofia farmers was the only independent variable contributed significantly to explain the variance in their exposure to agricultural publications, while it was the attitudes towards innovations regarding Radio agricultural programs, and informal social participation regarding the TV agricultural programs.
4- The independent variables contributed significantly in explaining variance in farmers' exposure to agricultural publications in Fayoum were; educational level, landholding size, formal social participation, and respondent age category. Regarding exposure to Radio agricultural programs, the independent variables were; cosmopolitanism, and fatalism, while contacting change agents was the only variable contributing significantly in explaining variance in farmers exposure to the TV agricultural programs.
