Knowledge and implementation level of the farmers participating in the farmer field school for the tomato technical recommendation in some villages of Fayoum governorate

Abstract: The study is aiming at identifying the level of the respondents, who participating in the Farmer Field Schools (FFS), knowledge and implementation towards the tomato cultivation technical practices; identifying the significance relationship between the global degree of their knowledge and implementation of the tomato technical practices and some independent variables; identify the rate of contribution for the independent variables that are significantly correlated in clarifying the global variance for both the knowledge and implementation of the tomato technical practices; and identifying the problems confronting the FFS participants and their proposed solutions.
The study is carried out on a random sample of tomato farmers who are participating in FFS in the villages of Sila, Zawaat AL Karadsa, Damoskien, Bani Saleh and EL Sonbate, Fayoum district and in the villages of Manshiate Abde EL Magied, Manshiate Rahmy and Groad Etsa districts that amount 69 and 44 respondents respectively, Fayoum governorate. So the total sample reaches to 113 farmers representing 25% of the total FFS participants that amounts to 453 farmers. The data was collected by personal interviews using a structured questionnaire, which was earlier prepared and tested, during October 2002.
The data was quantitively treated and statistically analyzed by the simple correlation factor, step-wise multiple regression and correlation analysis, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, range and percentage.

Following are the most important results of this study:
1. Level of the respondent's knowledge and implementation towards the tomato technical practices was average and there was a positive correlated relationship between the level of respondent's knowledge towards the technical practices and the level of their implementation.
2. There was a significant direct relationship between the respondent' s knowledge of the technical practices and source of information, opening to the external world, social participation at significant level 0.01 and the size of land cultivated with tomato at the significant level 0.05.
3. There was a significant direct relationship between the respondent's implementation of the technical practices and the source of information, social participation and level of education at significant level 0.01 and the opening to the external world at the significant level 0.05, while there was indirect relationship for each of age, size of Land and size of land cultivated with tomato at the significant level 0.05.
4. The following independent variables significantly contributed in clarifying the variance in the level of the respondent's knowledge and implementation towards the tomato technical practices in Fayoum governorate: source of information; social participation; and level education.
5. There are seven major problems confronting the respondents in the tomato cultivation. These include the high cost of the tomato seedlings, the high infection of tomato with pests and diseases., the high cost of the fertilizers and pesticides, lack of information modem recommendations provided by the facilitators, mis-marketing of tomato crop, and the lowness of irrigation water.
6. The respondents proposed eleven proposals in order to tackle problems they are facing. They are as follow: developing market opportunities in order to facilitate tomato marketing, making tomato seedling available and with reasonable prices, making fertilizers and pesticides available and with reasonable prices, provision of highly resistance varieties, working on multiplication of the natural enemies of the pests that attack the tomatoes, easing the exportation procedures, solving the irrigation problem and increase the amount of irrigation water, building the capacity of the facilitators through the appropriate training. conducting extension seminars especially for tomato diseases and pests. establishment of tomato processing factory in Fayoum governorate and finally organizing the tomato cultivations at the republic leve
