Extension needs of farmers concerning processes of onion Crop post-harvest in El-Gharbia and El-Behaira governorates

Abstract: The main objectives of this research were to: (I) determine degree of respondents' knowledge need to the technical recommendations regarding post-harvest processes of onion crop. (2) determine degree of respondents need to implement the technical recommendations regarding post-harvest processes of onion crop. (3) determine the relationship between degree of respondents need to implement these recommendations and each of the stated independent variables. (4) know the constraints facing respondents concerning processes of onion crop post-harvest.
This research was conducted at Tanta and Basyoon districts in El-Gharbia Governorate and at districts of Etai El-Baroud and Khom Hamada in El-Behaira governorate which were choosen randomly from the districts cultivating onion crop, then four villages were choosen randomly (one village from each district) i.e.: Mehalet Menouf, Koom El-Nagar, EI-Eyoon and El-Toud from the studied districts.
Data were collected by using personal interviews from a systematic random sample amounted 308 respondents according to "Krejeci and Morgan". Simple correlation coefficient, multiple correlation and regression analysis (step-wise) and means in addition to frequencies and percentages were used to analyze data statistically.
The main results of this research are as follows :
- Degree of respondents' knowledge need to the technical recommendations of onion crop post-harvest was high regarding processes of storing and grading but this knowledge need degree was moderate regarding the others processes (classifi¬cation, transportation, packing and dehydration).
-Concerning the degree of respondents knowledge need to the technical recommendations of onion crop post-harvest the results showed that 44.81% and 40.58% from the respondents were come in high and moderate categories of knowledge need successively.
- Degree of respondents need to implement the technical recommendations of onion post-harvest was high regarding processes of storing, grading and packing but it was moderate regarding the others processes.
Concerning the degree of respondents need to implement these recommend¬ations about 52.6% and 39.9% from them were come in high and moderate categories of implementation need successively.
There was a significant relationship between the degree of respondents need to implement the technical recommendations of onion post-harvest processes and both of the following independent variables: respondent's main purpose from cultivating onion crop, years number of respondent's experience in cultivating onion crop, years number of exporting onion crop, degree of respondent's satisfa¬ction about the economical return of onion crop, and degree of respondent's exposure to agricultural extension services and activities at 0.01 level of signific¬ance.
From multiple correlation and regression analyses, four independent varia¬bles significantly affected on the degree of respondents need to implement the technical recommendations of onion crop post-harvest processes (30%). These variables were: degree of respondent's exposure to agricultural extension services and activities, years number of exporting onion crop, years number of respon¬dent's experience in cultivating onion crop, and degree of respondent's satisfa¬ction about the economical return of onion crop.
- The results showed that there were fifteen constraints facing respondents concer¬ning post-harvest of onion crop, the respondents were mentioned it with percentage ranged from 1.95% to 48.7%. The major constraints were as follow : Low price of crop and its instability (48.7%), shortage of agricultural extension efforts concerning stages of crop post-harvest (36.36%), high wages of skilled agricultural labour regarding stages of post-harvest (30.52%), high ratio of commission while marketing of crop (15.58%), unavailability of paved roads among cultivated large area of the crop (12.99%), insufficient news marketing regarding quantity and expected price of crop (11.36%), lack of various packs with suitable prices (10.06%), unavailability of storehouses and proper places for. crop preservation and storage (6.82%).
