The knowledge of cows and buffaloes breeders in the field of producing and marketing milk at Nubaria region.

Abstract: This study aims at identifying the level of knowledge of Cow and bufT'aloe breeders in the field of producing and marketing milk. It also seeks identifying the relationship between the dependent variable i.e. the breeders level of knowledge on producing and marketing milk on one hand and the independent variables on the other hand. In addition, The study identifies the contribution of the related independent variables in explaining the variation in the dependent variable.
The study is conducted at Buston and West Nubaria region where, two villages where selected purposively in each region, the two sub-samples are proportionally determined from the total population that amounts to 780 respondents. A random sample consisted of 210 respondents was drawn.
A questionnaire is used to collect data through personal interview. Frequencies, percentages, averages, standard deviation, simple correlation coefficient, and regression analysis were used as statistical means.
The main findings of the study indicate that the majority of the respondents (88%) lie on the two categories of low and moderate knowledge on producing and marketing milk. In addition significant relationships (P = 0.01) exist between breeders level of knowledge on cows and buffaloes, producing and marketing milk on one hand and the following independent variable : respondents age, education, the daily production of milk, and number of lactating animals. Other significant relationships (P = 0.05) include : size of animal heads, attitudes towards change and attitudes towards breeding milk animals. No significant relationship is found concerning the following independent variables : aspiration level, achievement motivation and contact with change agents.
Regression analysis indicate that the seven independent variables which have correlation with the dependent variable explains about 31% in the total variance as in the dependent variable. The most important problems production which face breeders are : expensive folders, absence of veterinary services, medicaments and vaccination. Marketing problems include the non-availability of fridges to preserve milk, exploitation exercised by merchants in the area, absence of milk plants and low prices of milk at farms.
