Rural people behaviors related to water canals pollution in some village in Shabrakhit district in Behera governorate.

Abstract: Villagers' behaviors in rural communities are important in determining the success or failure of natural resources conservation efforts especially related to water canals. The objectives of this study are to identify social, economic, and farming characteristics of farmers and their opinions about individuals' negative behaviors toward water canals pollution; to examine the relationship between social, economic, and farming characteristics of farmers and their opinions about individuals' negative behaviors toward water canals pollution; and to examine the relationship between farmers' opinions about individuals' negative behaviors toward water canals pollution and biological, organic, and non-organic chemistry pollution degrees in water canals in studied villages. The theoretical background is based on scientific school ideas of Neo-Malthusians theory. The items of theory best fits to explain how pollution and exhaustion takes place in natural resources such as water canals according to the individuals' negative behaviors. The study using case study method and the data were collected from four villages in Shabrakhit district in Behera Governorate by personal interview. The sample was including two hundred respondents. Frequencies, percentages, means, and simple correlation coefficient were used as statistical tools.
The results of descriptive analysis showed that the characteristics of farmers were as following: the average of age was 47 years, levels of education and income were low, the majority working in agricultural occupation and married, the average of family size was nine persons, farming size was very small (2.4 Feddans), and the numbers of farming animals and poultry was very low. The results indicated that most of the individuals were doing the following negative behaviors to polluted water canals such as throwing and washing the empty container of pesticides, throwing the dead animals and birds, throwing the garbage, and washing the fertilizer bags and pesticides spray tools. The results of correlation, in first stage, indicate that there were many significant relationships between social, economic, and farming characteristics of farmers and their opinions about individuals' negative behaviors toward water canals pollution. In second stage of correlation results, there were positively significant relationships between farmers' opinions about individuals' negative behaviors toward water canals pollution and biological, organic, and non-organic chemistry pollution degrees in water canals in studied villages.
