Proposed for Social Media Usage in Agricultural Extension in Egypt

Abstract: Abstract The research aims mainly at developing a proposed for Social Media SM. studied usage in agricultural extension in Egypt through identifying: respondent's usage of SM; the agricultural information farmers respondents obtaining from SM; the benefits, advantages & disadvantages of SM; and the improving suggestions of SM. to realize the research objectives a selected purposive sample was selected amounted to 166 of farmers who agreed to participate in this research; owned one or more of modern communication devices from 9 governorates to representative delta and upper governorates and reclaimed land. Data was collected by personal interview utilizing a tested questionnaire in the period of January to March 2018, this research is a descriptive exploratory research that depends on the approach of social survey by sample, and to analyze & to present data number; frequencies; percentages; and relative weight were used. The main results of the research were as follows: 1- 54.22% of respondents have owned a mobile phone, that is with the highest percentage of access to the studied SM. was 36.33%. Also 74.70% of respondents have owned a personal account on SM, in addition to the Facebook site is occupied first ranking of owned a personal account and personal, agricultural and entertainment purposes; that may seemed a logical result the site's dissemination old when compared it with the rest of the studied SM., also there were six of studied SM. the usage pattern of the respondents were daily (less than one to two hours); this may be indicated to their respondent's dependence on all different life aspects and that matched with the research review of literature. 2- Facebook has been found in first rank related to suitability of obtaining agricultural information with a relative weight of 45.50%, as well as the service forms of videos; photos following and chatting with others on the studied SM. have been found in the three first ranking according to the respondent's preference for the services forms which have been presented on these SM.; may that is due to the respondents need to treat the extension messages which were presenting on SM. in a visual format. 3- The general average relative weight of the respondent's benefit degree of SM. usage reached 20.67%, in the first rank was the respondents' benefit degree of SM. personal with relative weight 23.08%. 44.35% of respondents farmers have been reached to solutions of their agricultural problems on the studied SM., where has been found the whatApp in the top of them, also most of respondents mentioned that their agricultural problems have been solved completely and they are still using these solutions, in addition to 76.36% of them recommended these solutions to others farmers who faced the same problems. 4- The general average relative weight of the SM. advantages was 90.18%, also the time exceeded component was in the first ranking, while the general average relative weight of the SM. disadvantages was 53.05%, whereas the most important challenges facing the SM. usage in the Egyptian countryside are farmer's illiterate and lack of farmers ability to use the Internet and ICT tools with a relative weight of 81.99%. 5 - The respondents also reported that the suggestion of preparing training courses for farmers on how to use these SM. was found in the first rank from all suggestions that can activate the SM. role, while the mechanism of activating the SM. usage from the viewpoint of the respondents was confined on the conditions that must be available of the SM. service provider (to be followed a specialized and recognized body in the agricultural production field), plus the quality of information proposed through these SM. and the knowledge characteristics. 6. Based on the results of this research and review of literature, a suggested proposal for the studied SM. to be used in agricultural extension activities has been developed, and its composed from four aspects: the infrastructure of the devices and Internet; the SM. characteristics; the treatment of educational materials which loaded on these SM; and the beneficiaries usage of these SM.
