Knowledge Of Strawberry Growers Using Alternatives To Methyl Bromide In Soil Sterilization In Some Villages of Qalyubia Governorate

Abstract: Summary
This research aimed to identify the level of knowledge of the researched farmers about the harms of using methyl bromide, to identify their level of knowledge of alternatives to methyl bromide for strawberry crops, and to determine the level of knowledge of the researched farmers with steps on how to use these alternatives in soil sterilization when planting strawberries, and to identify the relative importance of alternatives to methyl bromide in Sterilizing the soil when planting strawberries from their point of view, and identifying the sources preferred by the researched farmers to obtain information on the use of alternatives to methyl bromide, and identifying the problems that the researched farmers face when using these alternatives from their point of view. The research was conducted in the centers of Toukh and Shebin El Qanater in Qalyubia Governorate, as it is considered one of the largest centers in the governorate in terms of area for strawberry crops, and the project of using methyl bromide alternatives for strawberry crops was implemented, and with the same criteria, the villages of Al Qalzam and Kafr Al Suhaibi were chosen from the center of Shebin Al Qanater, and the villages of Mit Kenana and Arab Al Ghadiri. From Toukh Center. The number of the research sample reached 250 respondents according to the Craigssee and Morgan equation, which represents 33.4% of the total number of farmers in the research area, which amounted to 750 farmers, and they were selected in a systematic random manner from the inventory lists of strawberry growers in agricultural societies in the villages chosen for the research, and the data were collected in a personal interview using a form A questionnaire was prepared for that. Tabular presentation in numbers, frequencies, and percentages was used to display and analyze the data, and the average score was used.
The most important results were:
1- Slightly more than half of the surveyed farmers (52%) have a high level of knowledge of the harmful effects of using methyl bromide in sterilizing agricultural land.
2- Nearly half of the surveyed farmers (46%) have low knowledge of alternatives to methyl bromide used to sterilize the land for growing strawberry crops.
3- The majority of the surveyed farmers, with rates ranging between (76% - 86%), have a low level of knowledge regarding the correct arrangement of steps to use methyl bromide alternatives used to sterilize the land when planting the strawberry crop.
4- The most preferred information sources for the surveyed farmers are government sources, and the establishment of extension fields.
5- One of the most important problems that the majority of the surveyed farmers approved in their attempt to use alternatives to methyl bromide to sterilize the soil in strawberry cultivation is their lack of good knowledge of how to use it by (78%), followed by the problem that the prices of alternatives are high and mentioned by the surveyed farmers by (76%).
