Rural Women Participation in major legumes field crops production in some Egyptian governorates

Abstract: The study aims at : I) Determining the level of rural women participation in producing the major legumes field crops including broad beans, lentils, peanut and soybean estimated by number of days which females participate with whether family, exchangeable and / or hired out of the total working days for each of these crops. 2) Determining diff¬erences in the percentage of female participation in farm labour for each crop of such crops in different studied locations. 3) Identifying the preferable extension teaching methods by rural respondent women for receiving the extensi¬on messages of these activities.
For .realizing the second objective of the study research assumption was set up and tested in its nill conditions .
The study was carried on in five governorates which were Sharkia, Monoufis, Kafr El Shiekh, Ismailia, and Beni suet where one or more of the studied crops are planted. Tow vi¬llages in each governorate for each of broad beans and lent¬ils crops, and one village only for each of peanut and soybean crops. Data were collected from 400 respondent rural women in the mentioned five governorate with a rate of 100 of them for each crop by personal interviews using a pretes¬ted questionnaire, means and " T " test were used for data analysis.
The results of the study were :
a) Percentages of female participation in broad beans, len¬tils, peanut and soybean crops amounted to 22.9, 40.4 33.1, and 22.3 percent respectively .
b) A significant difference was found in percentages of res¬pondent rural women participation for each of lentils and soybean crops in the studied arena, Where percentage of female participation in lentils crop was highly with very significant grade in Kafr El sheikh than Sharkia governo¬rate, and also for soybean crop such participation was higher in Monoufia than Beni suif governorate. c) Respondent rural women participation percentage in peanut crop was significantly, higher at the 0.05 level in Ismailia than in Sharkia governorate related to hired labour only, while no significant differences existed between the areas of the study for peanut crop releated to the total and the family labour.
d) For broad beans crop, no differences were found between the studied area's in respondent rural women participation percentages in agricultural labour for this crop regarding to both family and hired labour .
e) Nine extension methods were prefered by the respondent rural women including office visit for the extension agent in the agric. Cooperative, T.V. programs, visit of female ext¬ension agent to rural families homes, radio programs, local leaders, extension meetings, extension publication, husband and friends and neighbors.
