Perception of verification trial farmers regarding plant characteristics affecting maize (variety hy. 204) production in some A.R.E. governorates

Abstract: Because the verifications trials' fields for maize are concidered field locations where components of the agricultural information system meet which are research, extension and farmers for judging the agricultural innovation , (new maize variety hy. 204), The study objectives were to determine farmers perception of plant characteristics affecting the production of the new maize variety hy. 204. Data of this study was collected from a farmer's random sample amounting to 100 farmers representing about 50 percent of all verification maize trial farmers in 5 governorates, which are Garbiah Monofia, kafr EL- Shiekh, EL- Menia and Sohag. For presention and analysis of data, the following statistical means and criteria were utilized. Frequencies, percentages, differences between percentages and simple correlation.
The main results of this study could be summerized in the following: 4 major points: 1- Farmers of the verification trials know with a degree ranging between moderate and high regarding the majority of the optimal characteristics limiting and affectir4g maize production except for one characte¬ristic which is the number of raws per an ear. 2- Verification trial farmers percept with a degrees ranging bet¬ween moderate and High the majority of optimal characteristics lemiting and affecting maize variety her. 204 production except for 2 characteris¬tics which are number of raws per an ear and location of ears in the plant. 3- There is no significant differences in farmers knowledge of the optimal characteristics limiting and affecting the hy. 204 maize variety and their perception about them except for 4 characteristics only which are: percentage of ear opening, size of seed, weight of seed and thickniss of empty eary. 4- There is significant difference on the 0.01 level between farmers perce¬ption of the optimal characteristics limiting and affecting the hy. 204 maize variety and each-of the follow¬ing. factors:- cultivated maize area, farmer's age, attitude towards agricultural extension agent, and size of land holding, while this relation was significant on the 0.05 level with the variable of farmers' educational status.
