An Analytical Evaluation of the Land Secrets Television Program

Abstract: This evaluation was aimed at analyzing the content and format of the Land Secrets programs from November 1990 through October 1991. The purpose of Land Secrets is to transfer some agricultural knowledge, technology, and innovations, mixed with soma entertainment for farmer families. There is no doubt that television programming is an: important and effective method for extension education. The Indirect educational approach of Land Secrets was the firs: such effort in agriculture in Egypt.
Land Secrets programs were produced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and Agriculture Cooperative Development International (ACDI) with funding tram USAID.
Thirty nine episodes of the Land Secrets series were used in the analysis. The content analysis involved agricultural and social topics. Plant production topics were involved in 69.41% of the programs, rural community topics were in 16.32%, and animal production topics were in 14.27% of the programs.
in plan production, cotton was most often mentioned. Wheat and local beans were mentioned as winter crops. Bananas, grapes, palm and medical/aeromatic plans were mentioned in one episode each. Soybean was the predominant oil crop mentioned.
Agricultural operations subjects of land preparation, soil improvement, fertilization, pest control and irrigation were mentioned in one episode each. Calf fattening, artificial insemination, green fodder, chemically treated (ammonia) rations, aquaculture and bees were each mentioned once in different episodes.
Rural community development topics mentioned once in different episodes included social participation, local handy crafts, agricultural regulations and laws, energy sources, sugar consumption and loan utilization.
All of the episodes had a direct message, while only 58.97% contained indirect messages about agricultural and social topics.
The programming format of the Land Secrets episodes was found to contain 48.7% comedy, 15.4% tragedy and 35.9% neutral. However, comedy was used some in the tragedy and neutral treatments.
All episodes contained background music. Dancing in all its forms and styles was contained in 38.5% of the series, folk songs were in 35.9%, feedback and future imagination were in 28.2% of the broadcasts and folk proverbs were present in 12.8% of the total contents.
Forms of dialogue were also notes. intrapersonal (thinking, feeling, introspect).
