An analytical evaluation of Ismailia listening forum

Abstract: The Development Support Communication Center (DSC) In Fayed, Ismailia Governorate, since 1988 has organized Listening Forums as an extension services for Ismailia Governorate Villages (IGV) using audio cassette recordings.
The importance of providing information via Listening Forums is realized. The study was conducted to analyze the contents, to define and assess the subject areas covered and to determine what is needed for the target group.
This analytical evaluation was confined to the Listening Forum conducted during the period from 1 September 1990 to 30 September 1991 in 16 villages in Ismailia Governorate.
The major findings of the study can be summarized as follows:
1- Most series of the Listening Forums Program consisted of four main parts - religion, agriculture, general health and musical background.
2- All studied Listening Forums program amounted to 5 hr. 20 min., 59 sec. and 24 parts. The mean was 13 min., 22 sec. and 29 parts per each Listening Froum Program.
3- All Listening Forum Programs in the study included religious and agricultural - periods, which means a firm commitment from the program-organizers and producers.
4- There is a trend to include vegetable crops In general and tomato and strawberry crops In specific. They have the most frequent and time amounting among topics in categories of analysis.
5- Information and recommendations regarding rice were the least frequent, while those for Peanuts, Fababeans and Wheat were the most frequent for field crops category.
6- Information and recommendations regarding Mango and Citrus crops were the most frequent among fruit orchads category.
7- Subjects dealing with poultry, rabbits and pigeons husbandry and breeding as well as subjects of animal feeding, health, land reform and land reclamation were Included.
8- All Listening Forums Program were presented in the same form in a commentary or reading way at a very rapid speed above 160 words/min.
9- Analysis of feedback reports showed that:
60% of the rounds were giving answers to farmers questions. Also, expert discussions were included to give answers during and after Listening Forums meeting.
