Some variables affecting the societal awareness of rural students in El-Azhar university

Abstract: The main objectives of this study were to:
(1) Determine the Societal awareness level of rural students regarding the political, economic, health and environmental areas.
(2) Determine the relative importance of societal awareness sources in each area.
(3) Determine the relationship between the level of political awareness of rural students and each independent variable which were as follows: age, sex, factuly kind, number of family members, the educational level of rural student's father, job of rural student's father, the family economic level, membership in social organizations , participation in developmental projects, cosmopoliteness, and the participation in cultural and sport activities .
(4) Determine the relationship between the level of economic awareness of rural students and each independent variable mentioned above .
(5) Determine the relationship between the level of health and environmental awareness of rural students and each independent variable mentioned above.
(6) Determine the relationship between the level of societal awareness of rural students and each independent variable mentioned above .
Date were collected During December 1995 by personal interviews from a random sample amounted 167 rural students who are studying in El-Azhar University. This sample includes 132 male students and 35 female students . Chi square test was used to analyze data statistically , in addition to frequencies and percentages.
The results of this study revealed that:
1 - The political awareness level of 47.9% was moderate, while this level was high and low for 34.1% and 18% of respondents respectively.
2 - The economic awareness level of 46.7% was moderate , where as this level was low and high for 40.7% and 12.6% of respondents respectively .
3 - The health and environmental awareness level of 47.3% was high . But this level was moderate and low for 45.5% and 7.2% of respondents respectively .
4 -The Societal awareness level of respondents was mederate for .51.5%, while this level was high and low for 28.1% and 20.4% of respondents respectively .
5 - The important sources of societal awareness of respondent rural students were books, newspapers , magazines, radio and television programs .
6 - There was significant difference at 0.05 level between the policital awareness level of respondents and two independent variables which were : Membership in social organizations and cosmopoliteness .
7 - There was significant difference at 0.05 level between the economic awareness level of respondents and two independent variables which were: age and the economic level of respondent's family .
8 - There was significant difference at 0.05 level between the health and environmental awareness level of respondents and four independent variables which were : age, faculty kind, cosmopoliteness and the participation in cultural and sport activities.
9- Generally, there was significant difference at 0.05 level between the societal awareness level of respondents and two independent variables which were : the educational level of respondent's father and membership of social organizations.
