An analytical study for some variables related to farmers' knowledge and attitudes concerning the use of some cotton pests' biocontrol, in Toukh and Banha districts, Qualyoubia governorate

Abstract: This study aims mainly to: identify farmers' knowledge and attitudes concerning the use of some cotton pests' bio-control and their relation to some independent variables, identify the contribution percentage of the independent variables correlated significantly to both farmers knowledge and attitudes concerning the use of some cotton pests' bio-control to explain the fatal variance in the studied dependent variables.
To achieve these objectives, a random sample of 210 farmers was drawn from Toukh and Banha districts, Qualyoubia Governorate. The data were collected in October, 1996 by personal interview using a pre-tested questionnaire.
Simple correlation coefficient, multiple correlation and regression analysis "step-wise", percentages, means and frequencies were used to analyze the data statistically.
The main results of the study revealed that:
- 47.5% of the respondents had a high level of knowledge concerning the use of some cotton pests' bio-control, while 52.5% of the farmers had either moderate or low levels of knowledge.
- 47.1% of the respondents had unfavorable attitudes towards using of some cotton pests' bio-control, while 52.9% of them had favorable attitudes, which indicates the relatively low level of farmers' knowledge and attitudes in the studied area.
- The variables: the degree of farmer's formal social participation, the degree of participation in Agricultural Extension activities and the degree of farmer's exposure to mass media contributed significantly to explain the total variance of farmers' knowledge level concerning the use of some cotton pests' bio¬control, as the percentage of contribution amounted to 35.39%.
- The two variables of: cosmopoliteness and contacting change agents were shown to have a significant contribution to anticipate farmers' attitudes towards the use of some cotton pests' bio-control, as their contribution percentage amounted to 39.38%.
