Some Social Effects of Unemployment Among Rural Graduates in Sharkia and El-Minia Governorates

Abstract: The main objectives of this study were to:
(1) Determine some personal characteristics of unemployed rural graduates.
(2) Determine the relationship between the personal behavior of respondents and each independent variable as follows: age, years of education, unemployment duration, farm holding size, dwelling status and animal holding size.
(3) Determine the relationship between the unemployment duration of respondent graduates and each of the following variables: attitude towards education, attitude towards governmental work, familial alienation and societal alienation.
(4) Identify the recommendations of respondent graduates to overcome the unemployment problem and its effects.
Four villages were selected randomly from Sharkia and F.I-Minia governorates according to the widespread of unemployment problem. Data were collected by personal interviews from a sample amounted to 200 unemployed rural graduates. Those respondents were chosen by asking the informants and reviewing the membership lists of rural youth centers in each selected village. A pretested questionnaire included valid and reliable scales to measure the attitude towards education, the attitude towards governmental work, familial alienation and societal alienation. Simple correlation and regression coefficient were used to analyze data, in addition to frequencies and percentages.
The results of this study revealed that:
1. The average of unemployment duration amounted to 5.5 years for the vast majority of respondents. Both farm and animal holding size belonged to them were small. Their income level and dwelling status were relatively low.
2. According to the results of simple correlation coefficient, there were significant relationship at 0.01 level between the personal behavior of respondents and each independent variable except the number of education 1 eats.
3. According to the results of simple regression coefficient, there were significant and negative relationship between the unemployment duration and the two following variables: the altitude of respondents towards education and the personal behavior of respondents. There was no significant relationship between the unemployment duration and the familial alienation of respondents. There was also significant and positive relationship between the unemployment duration and the societal alienation of respondents.
4. The respondents suggested some important recommendations to overcome the unemployment problem and its effects. These recommendations were as follows:
a) Obtaining loans at low Interest rate.
b) Introducing governmental projects relevant to the capabilities and specialization of graduates in rural communities.
c) Encouraging the graduates to receive the newly reclaimed lands and developing the management of their project.
