Limitations of selecting extension methods used by village extension workers to implement extension program for wheat in Menoufia and Sohag govemorates

Abstract: The study aims at determining The Village Extension Worker's (VEW) level of knowledge regarding the limitations considered to select extension Methods, determine extension methods used to implement extension program for wheat. Also, it aims to identify the obstacles faced by VEWs in applying the selection limitations of extension methods and their suggestions to overcome these obstacles.
The study took place in Monofia and Sohag Governorates as the largest areas growing wheat in Lower and Upper Egypt's . A random sample was drawn representing about 50% of the VEWs working in Bagour and Monofia districts in Monofia Governorate, and Souhag and Gerga districts in Souhag Governorate as the sample size rated to 93 VEWs. Data were collected by Personal interview using a questionnaire during May and June 1995.
The results showed that the VEWs knowledge level is high for three of the limitations considered to select extension methods which are: frequent contact possible, recommendation execution timing and audience characteristics. The knowledge level regarding the rest of the limitations showed to be moderate.
The more frequent extension methods used to implement the extension programs for wheat in the studied area were : extension meetings, visits, extension bulletins, vedio films, field demonstrations, posters, local broadcasting, Agricultural Extension Magazine, and field days. The limitations that were practically considered to select extension methods from VEWs point of view focused on : costs, the nature of the recommendation and the audience characteristics. The results revealed also that VEWs faced two groups of obstacles when applying selection limitation to choose the suitable extension methods. The first group involves the obstacles related to resources concerning: insufficient extension publications and late delivery, poor transportation budgeting and VEW's incentives. The second group concerned human side development like the high VEW's training need in the area of using extension methods, lack of farmer's enthusiasm to attend extension meetings, and literacy among farmers. To overcome these obstacles; VEWs suggested to increase the numbers of extension bulletins and magazines delivered and to be handy earlier, more training courses in the field of extension methods, raise the budget of VEWs transportation, find suitable places to hold extension meetings, raise financial budgeting for demonstration fields, assign VEWs incentives on regular bases, more space for rural programs in mass media, and preparing a suitable office for the VEW.
in the light of these results it is recommended to give more concern to the VEWs standard of knowledge about the limitations to be considered when selecting suitable extension methods by increasing specific training opportunities in this area establishing as well as regular contact bases with extension researchers during the preparation of working plans of the extension programs.
