Environmental behavior of Saudi woman and her need for specialized extension activities

Abstract: Most of the environmental pollution problems in Saudi Society are due to some incorrect practices which are done by Saudi woman and her family members in daily living manners, inside or outside their houses Such practices are done because of low level of environmental awareness in the five Geographic areas of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This study aims at determining: (1) The degree of Saudi woman in limiting pollution, (2) The differences between the Saudi women degree of limiting pollution in the five areas, (3) Level of Saudi women extension 'needs in limiting pollution, (4) The indicators of pollution and limiting pollution which relate to the behavior of Saudi Women and their families. (5) The relationship between some of educational and socio-economic variables which link to the inhabitants of each area and the following dependent variables:- a) Level of extension needs of Saudi woman in limiting pollution, b) Level of air pollution, radiation pollution, and biological pollution, c) The degree of limiting : air pollution, chemical and cultural pollution, (5) Sources of information for saudi women in limiting pollution area and its priority for the respondents.
Data were collected through a questionnaire from intended sample of 224 Saudi women from the families of male and female students of faculty of Agriculture, King Saud and King Faisal Univ. , during first semester of the year 1994. percent Ratio, Frequencies, Sperman rank order correlation, "t" test, Analysis of variance, and Friedman two-way Analysis of Variance (Xi.), were used for data analysis.
The Important results were:
1) The Average of limiting pollution degree for Saudi Woman was at maximum value 37 degree in the eastern area, and its minimum value was 33,4 in the southern area, related to maximum degree of 48 of the scale which means that their are Extension needs in limiting pollution for suadi woman.
2) Significant differences were found between the five groups, towards the degree of limiting pollution.
3) There is a high level of extension needs for Saudi Women regarding Six practices of the scale, moderate level for two, and low level for four practices of the scale.
4) There was an observed variation regarding the indicators of pollution and limiting pollution which relate to the behavior of Saudi Women and their families over the areas.
5) There was significant correlation relationships between the following variables:- a) Level of respondents Extension needs for limiting pollution as dependent variable and: ratio of husbands working in Agriculture, and ratio of families holding cultivated land, over the five areas, as independent variables, b) Level of air pollution by photochemical smog and husbands level of education, c) The degree of limiting air pollution by cooking exhaust fumes as a dependent variable and: illiteracy ratio of women, and ratio of simple families of the respondents as independent variables.
6) The sources of information for Saudi Women were dependent radically on the t.v., and locality sources of information and their personal experience. The priority varied over the five areas, which means that they need extension programs planned for every Geographic area.
