Farmers' educational needs concerning sugar beet in some reclaimed land of Kafr El-Shaikh governorate

Abstract: Although Kafr EI-Shaikh Governorate posses the largest sugar beet planting area in ARE, the average yield per feddan was less than other areas in 95/96 season. Hence, this study was conducted to identify farmers' knowledge level regarding the new technical practices of sugar beet crop, as well as their implementation level of these practices in order to assess their knowledge and practices needs. Also, it aimed to define the effect of some dependent variables on the knowledge and practices level. To achieve the last objective, two research hypotheses were formulated and tested in the null shape.
The study took place in 4 villages in El-Mansour sector, El-Hamoul district, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate. A random sample of 113 farmer was drawn. Data was collected by interviewing respondents using a pre-tested questionnaire during October and November 1997. Percentages and simple correlation were used to analyze data statistically.
The results revealed the farmers high knowledge and practices needs concerning: Green beetle infection characteristics, Green beetle resistance ways, the suitable amount of potassium sulfate fertilizer, appropriate timing to add potassium sulfate fertilizer, characteristics of beet fly infection and beet fly resistance ways. These needs ranged between high and moderate level. The results revealed also that the variable of "contacting sugar beet information sources" is correlated positively to both farmers' knowledge and practices levels of the studied recommendations of sugar beet.
