A comparative study of the knowledge and implementation level of banana's farmers about technical recommendations of cultivating and production in one newly reclaimed area and other old area in el-Menoufia governorate

Abstract: This study aims to determining the knowledge and implementation level of
Banana's farmers about the technical recommendations for cultivating and production of this product in two comparative areas at EI-Monoufia governorate, which the first in newly reclaimed area (Sadat) and the second in an old area (Ashmon)
Also determining the differences in farmer's knowledge and implementation level related to Banana's technical recommendations in the two comparative studied areas. Also it aims to determining the relationship among some studied independent variables and the interviewees level of knowledge and implementation about this product Finally it aims to determine the problems facing 11u-mets to producing of their banana product in each attic two studied comparative areas
Shatanof village in Ashmon district and El Gabal area in Sadat City were chooser] for carrying out the comparative study as they were the largest areas cultivated with Banana product, with 105 chosen randomly interviewees from each of the two studied areas using Morgan & Krejcie equation, totaling 210 interviewees as the random samples for this study
A personal pre-tested questionnaire was utilized for data collection throughout personal interview through February and March 1998
For data presentation & analyses and deducting results tables, percentages, averages, (Z) test for telling the differences between two averages. variance, simple correlation of Person and Stepwise multiple curt elation and regression statistical criteria were utilized.
The study revealed the following major results.
• The knowledge level of farmers in the old area exceeded their similar in the newly reclaimed area in 7 Banana's cultivation and productive practices, while those of the new area exceeded their similar in the old area in the S other practices.
• The implementation level of farmers for these technical recommendations exceeded in the newly reclaimed area their similar in the old area in 11 practices, while the opposite was true for only the remaining one practice related to banana's product technical recommendations
• There were significant differences in the farmers' knowledge level in the two studied areas for 8 practices, while there were for 9 practices for the farmers' implementation level in the two studied areas
• The knowledge level of banana's farmers interviewees in both studied two areas was significantly related to the degree of the interviewees education, while this relation was significant in the newly reclaimed area with the factors of attitudes toward extension and participation in the local organizations. 'It was also significant in the old area with the factors of interviewees' age, number of years for cultivating Banana crop at the 0:05 level of significance.
• The level of farmers interviewee's implementation of Banana recommendations in both of the studied areas have significant relationships at the 0.05 level for each of the two studied independent variables, the degree of the interviewees' education and the number of years of cultivating Banana crop. This relationship was also significant at the 0.05 level of significance with each of the studied independent variables of size of land holding, size of area cultivated with Banana crop, attitude towards extension and participation in the local organization of fanners of newly reclaimed area, while it was significant with age of the interviewees, beside the pre mentioned variables in old area.
• The participation in local organization, attitude towards extension and level of interviewees' education were variables having high percentage in the influence on the knowledge level of studied Banana farmers in the newly reclaimed area , while those factors having high percentage in the influencing on knowledge level in the old area were the degree of the interviewees' education and his age.
• Participation in local organizations, size of land holding and the degree of the interviewees' education are the variables having high influencing percentage on the implementation Banana's farmers level in the newly reclaimed area. While age and the degree of interviewees' education, were the two variables having high influencing percentage in the old areas.
• High prices of fertilizers, was the first problem mentioned by the farmers oldie two comparative studied groups, but they varried in determining priorities of other mentioned problems.
