Leadership behaviour of agricultural extension supervisors in some are governorates
Abstract:
The study aimed to: identify the level of leadership behaviour of Agricultural Extension Supervisors (AES), define the differences among the AESs response's rate toward each of the leadership component, and identify difficulties and supervision barriers encountering AESs.
The study was conducted in Menia, Sharkia, Dakahlia, Assuit and Menoufia Governorates as they have the highest rate of AES. working at the district level. Data were collected by interviewing a random sample of AESs in their weekly meetings using a pre-tested questionnaire during April and May, 1997. The sample amounted to 255 (40%) of the total number of AESs, distributed as follows: 70, 64, 47, 42 and 32.from the mentioned governorate respectively. Frequencies, means, ranges, standard deviation, percentages and Chi Square were used to analyse data statistically.
The results of the study revealed that:
- The leadership behaviour level of most respondents was moderate at a percentage of 76.43%, while the AES with the high and low levels rated to 11.37% and 10.2% sequentially.
- Significant differences were. detected among the responses' rate of most AESs, and also the total leadership behaviour degree of respondents.
- Supervision difficulties and. barriers were: having extension workers(EW) with extension experience less than 2 years (23%), variation in EW's educational qualifications (30.6%), variation in EW's age (9%), non-residence of EW's in their working village (20%), (23%/) of the AESs and (42%) of the EWs do not have transportation mean, supervision span for ( 21.96%) of the AESs exceeds 20 EW, and EWs frequent rotation under AES command during the previous year was encountered by 23% of the AESs.
