The image of Egyptian women portrayed by El Ard TV episodes a content analysis study

Abstract: Educational TV programs are considered as one of the most important means used in supporting education and extension activities. In addition, they assist in bringing about directed positive social change. This came as an impact for all the combining advantages they have. Consequently, the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture cooperated with Radio & TV Union in producing the educational TV episodes, "Sir El Ard" , in 15-20 minutes each.
Those episodes present miscellaneous educational contents, in contribution with a drama treatments, carried through comic situations. Those episodes aimed to cause direct positive socio-economic changes to the targeted audience including farmers and members of their families. This directed positive changes would be reflected positively on the communities they live in.
In this sense, those episodes are extended to cover and assist the Egyptian women with an emphasis rural woman needs and aspirations. In integrity the efforts have been made in those episodes with ambitious improvement in their educational contents, a need for content analysis study was aroused The main objective of this research is to conduct a content analysis of 200 episodes (about 57 hours and 35 minutes) as a way to identify woman presence including her role in and outside her household, different feminist issues and cases aroused, and actually of the issues aroused to real life. The study will also include different feminist cases presented and played by actresses including both positive and negative elements as shown in the episodes
According to the standard content analysis, measurement units were identified and categorized validity and reality were confirmed frequencies and percentages were used in presenting the obtained data.
The main findings of this study were as the following.
183 episodes (91.5%) targeted rural audience and their communities, 8 episodes (4%0 targeted females in general, and 9 episodes (4.5%) targeted rural women specifically.
Different actors and actresses took parts in presenting the episodes with the exception of only one episode that was presented by actors.
The episodes were categorized in accordance with the number of actresses.. About third of the studied episodes were presented by 3-4 actresses, 90% of the episodes were presented by five actresses or more
The analysis indicated the high percentages of actresses involved in presenting the studied episodes This clearly shows that the procedures of the episodes took into consideration equal participation of men and women with an emphasis on women's roles. Women roles in those episodes ranged between rural and urban ones. The studied episodes reflected different female criteria including 35 sacrifice situations, followed by emotional situations, then singing and dancing situations and advice ones.
13 positive situations were presented in the studied episodes including her presenting to knowledge and advice and cooperating with husband and others, presenting advises to sisters and brothers in law regarding proper family issues. In addition, the episodes presented characteristics of women who are looking for knowledge and information as a way to assure her self consciousness and increase her ability to improve her family life and raise her family standard of living.

The study content analysis demonstrated that the actresses portrayed proper positive situations for 91 acting scenes The selection of actresses for playing those scenes were in accordance with feature, make-ups, clothing's and natural acting in using the appropriate colloquial dialogues. In this sense, role of the episodes were appeared positively as an extension method.
Regarding the negative aspects appeared in the roles played by the actresses in those episodes were 20 situations characterized with seduction, 10 situations filled with quarrels and riots, non-obedient wife, jealous woman, western imitating woman, fear from jealousy, blocking husband's ambition, fraud, and exercising pressure with new social laws. It was noticed that those negative scenes were few and have positive notes of comics and jokes
The study content analysis showed some hot feminist issues including: gender equity in education, non-illiteracy of women, problems aroused as a consequence of husband's absence abroad, the feminist right to take her decision regarding marriage, women social rights after divorce, appropriate female age for getting married, material preparation for getting married, women right in marital housing after divorce, feminist role in environmental protection, polygamy problem, problem of overpopulation and its impact on women reproductive health, persuading village youth male in getting married from females of the same village, getting acquaintance between females and males before getting married and separate woman financial statements. Those situations were repeated 36 times as a way to create awareness and education They are also characterized, most of the time with direct links and integration with the drama.
