Attitude of female extension workers towards working through local female opinion leaders

Abstract: This study aimed at determining the attitude level of female extension workers (FEW) towards working through local female opinion leaders (LFOL), the independent variables affecting this attitude, the opinion of (FEW), towards: the criteria of selecting (LFOL), the mission of (LFOL) and the training needs of (LFOL) and the problems facing (FEW) during their working with (LFOL).
The study was carried out in four governorates: Beheira, Gharbiya, Qalyoubia and Beni – sweif. Data were collected from a random sample of 175 (FEW) through personal interview according to pre- tested questionnaire. Frequencies, percentage arithmetic mean and chi square tests were used to present and analyze data statistically.
The main findings of the study were
-65.71% of (FEW) had a positive attitude towards working through (LFOL).
-A significant relationship at 0.01% level was found between the level of attitude towards working through (LFOL) and age, years of agricultural extension experience and level of previous training. Significant relationship at 0.05% level was found between the level of attitude and place of birth and place of resident, while no significant relationship occurred with years of agricultural experience.
-From (FEW) point of views the criteria of selecting (LFOL) depend upon:
• Personal characteristics such as: The ability to influence over others, the initiative to take the lead , sense of responsibility , liked by their fellow. Social skills such as: share others in their occasions, ready to serve others, participate in village activities, cooperate with others and has many friends in the local community.
• Communication skills such as: the ability to persuade, the ability to express their opinion, accept the opinion of others and communicate with (FEW).
• Extension skills such as: reliable and a regular Mender of extension function, willing to try out new ideas, experience in farming and home economics practices, skills to work with others, experience in community interests, the ability to teach other and the ability to apply new ideas regarding the risks.
- From (FEW) point of view (LFOL) can assist in: teaching rural women, carry out rural women problems to (FEW), help rural women to identify their needs, give the facilities to conduct extension programs and help to improve the communication between rural women as extension group.
-From (FEW) point of view (LFOL) need to learn about a new practice, using extension methods, and human behavior concepts to -develop their capabilities
-The main problems facing (FEW) during their work with (LFOL) were: the illiteracy of (LFOL), need for training courses, the negative effect of (LFOL)`s husband, no incentive system, negative effect of (LFOL), no appropriate place to conduct extension activities, no cooperation between farmers.
