Study of reasons for farmer forbearing of cotton cultivation in El-Minia governorate

Abstract: This study has been carried out in order to detect the main reasons which enforce farmers to forbear cultivating cotton in El Minia Governorate, to determine farmer's satisfaction degree regarding cotton marketing system to detect the farmer's exposure level to cotton extension information sources and to study the Correlation coefficiency between yield average per feddan and : -
Age, educational level, land ownership, total cultivated area of cotton, and exposure level for extension information sources.
The present study was carried out in El Minia Governorate. The questionnaire was designed to collect the needed data through personal interview.
The data has been collected during the months of April and May 1999 .
The sample size was 90 cotton farmers who refrain growing cotton from 1996 to 1999 .
Ten farmers were selected from each district to represent the sample size.
The obtained data from the present study revealed that : -
The main reason which make farmers refrain growing cotton is mainly due to :
• Marketing problems, low net revenue per feddan , and unsatisfactory yield.
• Farmers were not satisfied with cotton marking system.
Data showed that out of the 90 selected farmers under study :-
* 18.9 % ( 17 farmers) fully care about getting extension information.
* 66.7 % ( 60 farmers ) care partially about getting extension information.
* 14.4 % ( 13 farmers) were rarely careing of getting extension information .
There were positive and significant correlation at ( 0.05 , 0.01 , and 0.01 level ) between yield average and age , educational level , and level of exposure to extension information .
• There is no significant correlation between yield average and both of : land ownership and cultivated area of cotton .
• There is no significant correlation between cultivated area of cotton and land ownership.
