Utilization of Ismailia governorate farmers for new irrigation systems "reasons and affecting factors"

Abstract: This study aimed to determining levels of farmer's utilization for new irrigation systems, and determining their attitudes towards such utilization, besides determining the most important reasons for their utilization for such new irrigation systems. Also determining the relationship between some studied independent variables of the interviewees and the degree of their utilization and attitudes towards the new irrigation systems, and then determining the degree of the participation of such independent variables related to these two dependent variables in illustrating their total variance.
This study was carried out in both El-Kassaseen and Fayed districts randomly chosen from Ismailia governorate. With the same criterion two villages were chosen from each district, which were: New Kassaseen and Old Kassaseen from El-Kasaseen district. Sarabiom station and Fayed from Fayed district. The total random sample amounted to 200 interviewees representing 14.84 percent of the total number of farmers applying these new irrigation systems amounting to 1348 farmers.
Data was collected by a questionnaire using persona! interview during January and February 2000. Data was presented and analyzed statistically using " Pearson simple correlation co-efficient, Phi coefficient, Chi-square Test, and step-wise multiple correlation and regression, beside tables, frequencies and percentages.
The study revealed the following most important results:
-The majority of the interviewees (86.5%) are utilizing with high degree the new irrigation systems in their farms.
-About half of the studied interviewees (49%) have strong favourable attitudes towards utilizing new irrigation systems.
About 62 % of interviewees refered that the most important reason of their utilization for new irrigation systems from their point of view is "regulatory of water distribution in the land, while 51.5% of them refered that the second reason is "the increase in their production returns".
The studied independent variables having significant relationship on the degree of utilization of new irrigation systems were: size of land holding, the degree of utilizing extension teaching methods, formal social participation, contact with change agencies, opinion leadership and attitude towards agricultural extension. Some independent variables : formal social participation, attitude towards agricultural extension, contact with change agencies and size of land holding participated with about 22.9% in illustrating total variance in the dependent variable.
There was positive correlation relationship between the degree of attitude towards utilizing new irrigation systems and each of the following independent variables of interviewees: size of land holding, the exposure degree to mass media methods, formal and informal social participation, contact with change agencies and attitude towards agricultural extension. Both of the two independent variables of: Attitude towards agricultural extension and size of land holding participated in explaining about 32,66% of the total variance in the dependent variable.
