Farmer's participation in field extension workshop groups in ismailia governorate (a study about field schools)

Abstract: This study aimed to recognize the reason behind farmer's participation in field extension workshop groups (field schools), relative importance of problems facing them from their point of view besides knowing some of their personal characteristics. This study was carried out in 4 villages representing 4 agricultural administrations in Ismailia Governorate which were Ein Ghosein in Ismailia administration, Sarabiom in Fayed administration, New El-Kassasen in El-Kassasen administration and Abou Swear station in Abou swear administration. The study was carried out on a sample amounted to 130 farmers chosen randomly from the 4 districts representing 16.5 percent of the tested farmers regularly attending field school meetings. Data were collected in August 2000 using a selected questionnaire through personal interview.
In presenting and analyzing data, frequencies, average, standard deviation, variance coefficient, weighted mean and percentage statistic criteria were utilized.
Results of the study could be summarized as follows:
The attending of the veterinarian with the Agricultural extension agent in the field school meeting has provided services as diagnosing diseases of farmer's animals and acknowledging them with animal disease

symptoms which are considered the first reasons behind farmer's participation in field schools with a percentage of 86.92, 83.25 and 73.08 percent respectively.
- Followed by other reasons which were the willing of applying the recommendations of field schools about developing animals husbendary (83.31%) and also production performance (83.1%).
- Finally come others important reasons of attending field schools which were agricultural extension agent permanent visits to farmers fields (76.92%).
The results revealed that there were 16 problems facing farmers in their animal production ranging between a minimum of (47.2%) and a maximum of (59.3%). The most important of these problems were: lack of distingiushed breeds of animals 59.3%, lack of supervision of producing and industry dry fodders 57.5 %, lack of milk marketing facilities 57.2%, lack of animal products processing efficiency 57%, lack of zonetic disease informations 55.3%, lack of good seeds for summer green fodder crops 54.2% and lack of some animal vaccines 53.7%.
- Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to carry out more studies for clearing and characterizing the concept of field schools. It is also recommended that efforts should be intensified in training agricultural extension agents for increasing their communication and technological skills, with finding a good institutional connection between agricultural extension and veterinarian services organizations to increase the animal production and animal wealth.
