Knowledge level and implementation of faba bean growers concerning Orobanche integrated control in Behera governorate [Egypt]

Abstract: This study aims to determine the knowledge level of faba bean growers about the Orobanche propagation and its integrated control recommendations, Orobanche infestation and its development from their point of view , determine the crops infested in Orobanche , farmers practices affect Orobanche propagation, and determine the relationship between their knowledge level concerning Orobanche propagation and its integrated control recommendation , and each of the studied independent variables.
Data were collected by personal interviews using a pretested questionnaire during April and May 2001 The sample amounted to 164 Faba bean growers of Sedi Okba El Mahmodia district, Salamon Khom Ramada district and El Rosimate Hosh lesa district, El Behera governorate. Means, standard deviation, frequencies, percentages in addition to simple correlation coefficient were used to present and analyze data statistically.
The results of this study revealed that the knowledge level of 72.6% of respondents about Orobanche propagation and its integrated control recommendations is moderate and low, 68.31% of the respondents know hand-pulling as a strategy to control Orobanchc, 34.8% of the respondents know the importance of chemical control, but they do not know the suitable pesticide, rate and time of treatment , Knowledge level about other recommendations is low , such as using organic manure contain no Orobanche seeds, frequent irregation, using resistant varieties , intercroping , delay sowing, Corp rotation were know that pecentages ranged from 4.9% to 25% of the respondents .
Results revealed that the infestation of the fields of 5 L8% of the respondents are large , the intensity of the infestation is increasing in the fields of 80.7% of the respondents having infested fields because there is no control , or numerous orobanche seeds in the soil , were said by 23.4% and 20.7% of the respondents , 88.4% of the respondents have seen Orobanche on faba bean crop , 46.3%have seen it on clover , and 29.9% of the respondents have seen it on Pea .
Hand pulling is the most common strategy to control Orobanche : 50.6% of the respondents pull out Orobanche shoots – from infested fields , 36.1% of them burn it and 63.9% of them threw it away on the roads and channals which considered sources of 32.9% of soil respondents Although 40.2% of the respondents execute frequent irrigation , 25% only of the respondents know its importance in Orobanche control , 16.5% use chemical control , 14.6% of the respondents execute intercroping , 6.7% of the respondents delay the sowing , 5.5% bread resistant host plants , 68.9% of the respondents depend on the market and advanced year crop as a source of seed , 62.8% of the respondents grow rice , only 3.7% of the respondents repeat clover cultivation 3-4 times to control Orobanche , 53.8% of the respondents reduce the area cultivated in faba been , and 3.7% of the respondents control Orobanche seeds in manure ,
There were significant postive relationship between the knowledge level of the respondents about the orobanche propagation and its integerated control recommendations as dependent variable and educational level and faba been extension services as independent variables . There were significant negative relationship between the knowledge level of the respondents about Orobanche propagation and its integerated control recommendations as dependent variable and age and fatalism as independent variables.
