Villagers Attitude "Toward Rural Women Access To Work

Abstract: This study focuses on attitude of villagers toward women access to work and to explore the relationship these attitude and selected socio-economic factors.
The study also attempts to: (a) identify villagers opinions on the desired place for women to work and types of job they preferred for women, (b)establish a criteria for the source of women social status as perceived by villagers.
Data utilized in this study were obtained from interview schedule collected from villagers during March-April 1999. A random sample of 275 respondents were selected for interview . 150 respondents were selected from Gezeirat Al Arab and Biaho villages of Meina Governorate , the remaining 125 respondents were selected from El Samana and El Gazaly villages from Sharkia Governorate.
The relationship between variables was explored by cross-tabulating the dependant with the independent variable, using contingency tables, the chi square was used to determine weather or not the relationship between variables is statistically significant.
The result of the study shows the following:
l- Attitude toward women access to work
About one half of respondents in the selected sample (49.8%) had strong positive attitude toward women work. (41 %) had a moderate attitude while (9.1%,) of the respondents had negative attitude. This mean that respondents are totally convinced of women access to work and the importance role of women work in developing her personality as well as her family and community.
2- Analysis of data shows that there was a statistically significant association at 0.01 level between respondents attitude toward women work and each of the following factors: educational level, employment status, monthly income, Size of farm family holding, and level of mass media awareness. The data also shows there was no significant association between respondents age and their attitude toward women work. Desired place for women work. About three-fifths of respondents (59.6%) preferred governmental employment for women, one quarter (23%) preferred private cottage projects or a small business, while less than one tenth (7,6%) of respondents reported that the best place for women is to stay home and play her role as a house wife .
3- Preferred type of job for women:
Data shows that more of three fourth of respondents (77.5%) consider teaching as the most suitable job for women. Less than one half (44%) perceived that medical services are suitable for women, while more than one fourth (29%) preferred nursing for women employment, more than one third (34.5%) considered private business are suitable for women, while (31.3%) of them preferred administrative work . The least preferred employment for women were as follows: nursing (10.2%), accounting (8%), engineering (7.37) respectively.
4- Access to small projects:
About two thirds of respondents (65.1%) didn't agree to encourage women to have loans for small projects, (34.9%) agree to encourage women to have loans for there private small projects.
5- Women social status:
Respondents rank order for the main sources related to women social status were as follows: good repetition (72%), education (969.8%), good appearance (68.7%), religious (66.9%), good and obedient wife (65.7%), good mother and housewife (62.5%), working women (62.5%) respectively, from reach family (35.6%), pretty (27.6%), and finally a wife of important person (8.4%).
