A study of determination's of agricultural modernization in some villages in Kafr el -Sheikh governorate

Abstract: Agricultural modernization is considered to be an essential element in the acceleration of agricultural development process. Therefore, the overall objective of the present study was to assess levels of agricultural modernization and to determine their causes. To achieve this objective, the following specific tasks were stated:
To build a conceptual frame of agricultural modernization on the basis of existing research studies.
To construct indexes and assess the theoretical and statistical adequacies of the selected empirical indexes to identify agricultural 1 modernization degree.
To identify ; factors that are related, determinated, and more effective in explaining the variance in agricultural moder ization and its components.
The research was conducted in three villages in Sidi-Salem
district, Kafr El-Sheikh governorate. They are Alqun, Al-Mashargah and al-Easawia villages. A stratified random sample - on the basis of existing modern agricultural technology and practices in these villages- was selected. 271 farmers' were personaly interviewed to collect the data through constructed schedules.
The data were coded, tabulated and statisticcally analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, multiple- linear regression, t-test, z-scores and reliability estimates techniques.
Based on the literature review, the study has adopted a conceptual framework that views agricultural modernization as a multidimensional, concept. It includes two dimensions. They are modernization of farms, and fanners modernity. Each dimension was operationally translated into a composite structured by averaging the standard scores of its indicators. Farms modernization is. made up of five indicators, i.e., adoption of rice recommended practices, adoption of sugar beat recommended practices, adoption of new recommended practices) in animal production, adoption of soil improvement practices and adoption of agricultural mechanization practices. Fanners modernity was ' made up of five indicators also. They are: attitude toward change attitude
toward agricultural machines, attitude toward agricultural
extension, attitude toward risk and attitude toward education.
The study proposed that, each dimension as well as the overall dependent variable- agricultural modernization are associated and affected by eighteen independent variables. These variables are: educational status, family education, agricultural landholeling size, family income, standard of living, family possessions, weighted agricultural animal holding size, opinion leadership, formal social participation, informal social participation, participation in developmental activities, cosmopoliteness, exposure to information sources, cling 'of agricultural work, achievement motivation, job, age and experiences in cultivation.
The major results of this study could be summarized as follows:
- Larger percentage of farms were moderately modernized on the dimensions and measure of agricultural modernization.
Agricultural landholding sizes, family income, family possission, weighted agricultural animal holding size, opinion leadership, formal social participation, informal social participation, cosmopoliteness, exposure to information sources, achievement motivation, standard of living, cling to agricultural work were correlated positively and significantly with modernizing farms.
