Source For The Farmers' Knowledge Of
Some Field Crops At Sharkia Governorate

Abstract: The main objectives of this study were : (I) to determine the respondents' watching rate related to the agricultural component; (2) to determine appropriateness of the agricultural component elements; (3) to determine the respondents knowledge of the innovative recommendations of crop production processes; (4) to determine relationship between respondents knowledge and beneficence score acquired, accrued from the recommendations broadcasted in the agricultural component, and the studied independent variables; (5) to determine the respondents' perception to problems that obstruct and diminish benefits of the agricultural component; and (6) to determine the respondents' suggestions for enriching beneficence of the agricultural components' information. The study data were collected during the period from January . to February, 2001. Three written questionnaires were used with interpersonal interviews of 291 respondents (96 cotton farmers from Didamon village, 100 wheat farmers for Arab-Darwish village, and 95 rice farmers from Senita village). The study respondents were selected in accordance with three preconditions : (1) they should be among fanners of cotton, wheat, and rice; (2) they should have television sets; and (3) they should watched the agricultural component episodes. Frequency tables, percentages, modes, weighted arithmetic means, ' Chi-square, contingency coefficient, and simple correlation coefficient were used in analyzing the study data. - The main findings of the study were stated as follows : (1) There were similarities among the respondents concerning their watching rate; and the respondent watching rate was in favor of the respondents who watch the component permanently with percentages of 57.4 for cotton, 54 for wheat, and 60% for rice; (2) Appropriateness of elements of the agricultural component, episodes, as perceived by the respondents, were 73.3% for cotton fanners, 77% for wheat farmers, and 78.5% for rice farmers; (3) The respondents who gained knowledge from recommen¬dations broadcasted in the agricultural component episodes were 28.4% of cotton respondents, 61.9% of wheat respondents, and 65.3 of rice respondents; (4) The respondents' who benefited from the broadcasted recommendations were 88.7% for cotton, 72.3% for wheat, 71.7% for rice; (5) The percentages of the respondents who mentioned the agric. component episodes as, the first Agri. source were, (59.1 for cotton, 41.4 for wheat, and 44.7 for rice); (6) There was a significant relationship between the cotton respondents knowledge and beneficence and each of the independent variables of age, job, and watching rate; (7) There was a significant relationship between the wheat respondents' knowledge and beneficence and each of the independent variables of job, number of years education, multiple production activities, and watching rate; (8) There was a significant relationship between the rice respondents' knowledge of the innovative recommendations of rice production and each of the independent variables of job, and number of years of education; (9) There was a significant relationship between the rice respondents beneficence concerning rice production and each of the independent variables of number of years of education, agricultural land ownership, watching rate, and appropriateness of the agricultural component; (10) There was full accordance among the respondents that the most critical obstacles impede their beneficence from the agricultural component recommendations were : (1) no previous notification regarding the episode title, and broadcasting time/date, of the component; (2) no opportunity for asking questions on air directly; (3) broad-casting time is not enough, and (4) some of the broadcasting recommendations require lots of resources which can't be afforded by farmers, and (11) The respondents agreed, in full accord, that the most important suggestions for increasing their benefits were : (1) personifications of the future episodes each Friday at the end of the episode; (2) increasing broadcasting time; (3) permission of direct reaction for questions on air; (4) demonstrating during broadcasting time the new practices; (5) reproadcasting the new subjects; (6) decreasing the appearance of the episode presenter on the TV. screen; and (7) broadcasting the related episodes in order. The study presented four recommendations steamed from the findings. The application of these recommendation my increasie the beneficence of the episodes and may raise the extension service efficiency.
