The knowledge of wheat farmers for the crop technical recommondations in its major production governorates in egypt

Abstract: The research aims at determining the knowledge of wheat farmers regarding its recommendation practices which include: sowing date, proper soil for crop cultivation, land preparation, amount of seeds, irrigation, fertilization, weeds control, and harvesting. In addition to identify the contribution of some independent variables related to the respondents which affected on their knowledge degrees regarding the crop recommended practices and on the average production per feddan, plus identifying the constraints that are facing them during the crop production and marketing.
A total Sample amounting to 361 respondents was selected randomly among the wheat farmers from the mentioned six villages. Data were collected by a pre-tested personal interview questionnaire during june, 2006. For data analysis, simple correlation coefficient, step wise multiple regression and correlation analysis, arithmetic mean, frequencies and percentages were used.
The research was carried out in the major six governorates for the production of wheat. These include Sharkia, Kafr El Sheikh, Menoufia, Giza, Menia and Sohag Governorates. The basic criteria for the selection of the research area is the cultivated areas, where the biggest village within the biggest district was selected from each governorate as follows: El Azizia village- Menia El Kamah district-Sharkia, Meser village- Kafr El Sheikh district- Kafr El Sheikh, Sirs El Layan village- Menouf district - Menoufia, Bamha village- El Ayatt district- Giza, Tokh El Khal village- El Menia district- El Menia, Barkheel village- El Balyana district-Sohag.

The research results can be summarized as follows:
The knowledge of farmers regarding the recommended practices for the land preparation, sowing date, amount of seeds and crop harvesting was high, while the cultivation in the proper land, irrigation, fertilization and weeds control practices was low.
There are four variables contributing in clarifying the variance that affect on the knowledge of respondents regarding the recommended practices with 10.9 %. These variables were the degree of satisfaction for wheat cultivation, the degree of performing extension activities, number of years of wheat cultivation and the farm holding size.
Both of the availability of the irrigation water all the season and the degree of the availability of the high yielding seeds clarify the variance that affect on the wheat average productivity with 2.6 % It was found that there 22 constraints, from the farmers points of views, that face the wheat farmers. They are arranged descendingiy as follows: high price of fertilizers (54.8), lack of chemical fertilizers (34.1), lack of labour (19.9), lack of irrigation water (15.7), the irregularity of the irrigation water (10.8), high price of pesticides (9.9), the low level of irrigation water (8.3), unavailability of the organic manure (5.5), spreading of the weed (3.9), high costs of harvesting (2.4), low production(2.4), loading the farmers with the crop transportation (2.2), high price of seeds (1.9), high costs of land preparation (1.3), high costs of laser leveling (1.3), unavailability of the herbicides (1.3), dropping out of the kernels (1.3), mixing of the irrigation water drainage water (0.8), of the roads are not paved (0.8), spreading of the rates and birds (0.8), and lack of enough harvesting equipment (0.8).
