Performance Competencies for Subject Matter Specialists of Wheat Crop in Some Egyptian Governorates.

Abstract: The main objective of this research is to; assess the competencies of subject matter specialists (SMSs) performing different extension tasks related to wheat crop cultivation and production. The research was conducted by using a sample of crop specialists who performed the tasks of extension program development (planning, implementation and evaluation) during 2006 and 2007. The research are included seven governorates which were: Giza, Isamilia, Suez, Dukahlia, Sharkia, Assiut and Sohag. A random sample of (106) specialists was selected (33% of the population). The research data were collected during the period of April and May 2007. Through a written questionnaire by personal interviews was used for collecting the research data. Frequencies, percentage, range, chi square, simple correlation coefficient and Borich analysis of variance were used in analyzing the data statistically. The research findings indicated that the respondents (59%) had low competencies in performing extension tasks. There was a significant positive relationship between the total competency score of extension specialists in performing the agricultural extension development tasks studied and each of the following (5) independent variables: educational specialization, exposure to information sources, use of extension methods & Aids' Job satisfaction towards extension work and achievement motivation. The research indicated that there were about (29) problems facing SMSs of wheat crop in performing extension activities and suggestions (27) to overcoming these problems.
