Development of rural youth knowledge and attitudes in the field of natural Silk production in Sharkia governorate

Abstract: Sericulture and production of natural silk is considered as a good example of small agricultural project. This type of projects generate rapid income for rural youth with no need for high technology and available of its required inputs. The main objective of this paper is to identify some personal and soils - economic character is of producers of natural silk, determine level of their knowledge and attitudes towards of this project, relationship between their characteristics and their level of knowledge and attitudes and level of exposure to different source of knowledge. Finally, the study determined major problems in sericulture and proposed solution (s) from producer's point of view.
The field study was conducted in Sharkia governorate for a random sample of 120 producer. Questionnaire was designed and applied using personal interview during May and June 2004. Producers of descriptive and nonparame statistics are used for tabulation and analysis of data.
Major results of induced: 75% of producers are of age less than 25 years old. 62.5% of interview persons are graduated from secondary schools or/and high education. Level of knowledge for 60% of producers toward new techniques in this area is medium.
About 86% of intervied producer are of medium level of low level with negard to expansion of their projects in the future.
The most affecting factor on rural youths knowledge about new and modern technique is degree of exposure to knowledge and information sources. Youths attitudes are highly correlated with agricultural extension level efforts.
Marketing problems are the major factors as mentioned by producers and proposed solution includes:
(i) Availability of Mulberry seedlings
Make processing machines available.
(ii) Overcoming such problems is advocated through applied strategy.
