Decision making process of organic farming among farmers in Fayoum governorate

Abstract: Agricultural extension plays an important role in achieving sustainable rural development, according to the international and local recent variables, the agricultural extension would help farmers to make appropriate decisions through preparing fanners on the production and circulation systems of export crops, hence the study was devoted to identify the decision makers categories in the field of organic farming among farmers in the Fayoum governorate, and their most important reasons for adoption or rejection organic farming and also the most important production and marketing problems facing them in the field of organic farming. Data was collected from 200 respondent of two groups of farmers, the first group includes organic crops growers and the second one includes traditional crops growers.
The study results cleared that according to both of decision¬making model . (27.5%) of the total respondent farmers were continuant adopters of organic farming and (22.5 %) of them were late adopters while the ratio of discontinuant was 8%, and the ratio of rejectores for organic farming was 42% of the total respondent farmers. According to decision tree model, 37.5% of the total respondent farmers were committed organic, and 20% of them were pragmatic organic farmers, while the ratio of pragmatic conventional was 28.5% of the total respondent farmers, and the ratio of committed conventional category was 14% only. Also, it's cleared that there are significant differences between decision makers categories in the field of organic farming according to decision-making model and their counterparts according to decision tree model.
The study showed that achieving high return was the most important reasons for adoption of continuant adopters (89%) and for late adopters (95.5%), and the lack of commitment of some exporters to the terms of contracts with farmers was the main reason to the discontinuant of organic farming (44%), while the most important reason for rejectores was the unavailability of organic farming information (46%), According to the studied fourteen criteria of decision-tree model, the results clarified the agreement of all the respondent farmers on the fact that free organic agricultural products of pathogens (100%), and for committed organic was the high return compensates the low yield of organic production (36%), In regard to pragmatic organic and pragmatic conventional the main reason was the difference between the yield in organic production and traditional production is insignificant (37.5%), (36.8%) for both of them respectively, and they involved in the main reason for rejection too which was unavailability of organic farming information (30%), (36.8%) for both of them respectively, and committed conventional farmers attributed their reasons for rejection to using agricultural chemicals is not the only reason for human infection with diseases (21%), and of them mentioned necessity of the usage of agricultural chemicals to compensate the deficiency of soil fertility (79%), Also, the study results indicated to the most important production problems facing the farmers in the field of organic farming was the decrease of the yield of organic crop (19.5%), and the most important marketing problems was unavailability of information about different local and global markets (38.5%).
