Organizational Value Orientations of Agricultural Extension Agents in Sharkea Governorate

Abstract: As performance and productivity of agricultural extension agents is determined by their value orientations we must insure its congruency with agricultural extension organizational values. The study aims to determine the value orientations of agricultural extension agents working in Sharkea Governorate, to clarify the most appreciated values, and to investigate the relationships between the most appreciated value orientations, the total degree of the value orientations and the following independent variables: age, rural/urban background, residence, academic degree, graduation seniority,duration of service in agricultural work, duration of service in agricultural extension work, previous training, In addition the study aims to investigate the relationships between the most appreciated value orientations, the total degree of the value orientations and the following dependent values: achievement motivation, job satisfaction and the agents' performance degrees.
The study was conducted in Sharkea Governorate A sample of 150 persons was randomnly chosen out of 406 agricultural extension agents working in its districts. For data collection a questionnaire specially designed was used during their meetings. The questionnaire included personal characteristics, measures and scales. The instruments used were tested to insure validity and reliability. Frequencies, Averages, percentages, Chi Square test and simple correlation were used in analyzing data and presenting results in
addition to the tools used to assess the validity and reliability of the instruments, The results indicated that the most important values mentioned by more than 75% of the respondents included Creadibility, Honesty, A well marketed organizational image, A commitment to making programs available to all targeted rural people, People-Centered programs, Unbiased delivery of information, Faith in the ability to bring about a better future through the agricultural extension efforts. Relationships were indicated between each of the most perceived important values, the total degree of the value orientations and and attending previous training in addition to relationships with the number of training courses the agents attended. The results also indicated relationships between each of the most perceived important values, the total degree of the value orientations and the dependent variables studied including achievement motivation, job satisfaction and high performance degrees.
The study indicates the importance of studying the agricultural extension agents value orientations. It also recommends that extension agents must be given the opportunity to attend training courses in order to achieve the congruency between their value orientations and the agricultural extension organizational values, and that can lead to high levels of achievement motivation, job satisfaction and high performance degrees.
