Training Needs of Agricultural Extensionworkers in Giza Governorate in the Area of Rationalizing the Utilization of Pesticides and Integrated Pest Management

Abstract: The present study aimed to determine agricultural extension workers training needs concerning reducing pollution resulting from using pesticides through integrated pest management, and to study the relationship between their training needs level and some independent variables.
The study was conducted in Giza Governoratc. A sample of 93 persons was selected randomly. For data collection, the agricultural extension agents were asked to fill a specially designed questionnaire during October and November 2004 at personal interviews. A pretest was conducted in Fayoum Governorate asking a sample of 15 agricultural extension agents to ensure the clarity of the questionnaire content. For data analysis, averages, percentages and chi square were used. The results indicated the following:
1 .Concerning preserving the environment from the pollution resulting from using pesticides, about (74.25%) of the respondents training needs level is moderate, 22.6% training needs level is high. 2.Concerning integrated pest management, more than half of the respondents (51.6%) training needs level is high.


3.Concerning testing relationships between training needs level
related to preserving the environment from the pollution resulting from using pesticide and the independent variables studied, the results indicated a relationship at 0.05 level of significance between the respondents training needs level and the following variables: academic degree, rural / urban background, practing personal agricultural activities, cosmopoliteness.
4.Concerning testing relationships between training needs level
related to integrated pest control management and the independent variables studied, the results indicated a relationship at 0.01 level of significance between the respondents training needs level and the following variables: academic degree, duration of service in extension work, cosmopoliteness. It also indicated a relationship at 0.05 level of significance between the respondents training needs and the following variables: rural/ 5.urban background, rural / urban residence.
Most of the respondents get their environmental knowledge from
extension pamphlets as it was the highest choice for 58.1%of the respondents. Books were the least choice as reported by 26.91% of the respondents.
More than half of the respondents (58.1%) attended extension
6.training programs, 9.31% attended training programs concerning preserving the environment from the pollution resulting from using pesticide and integrated pest control management.
7.The main suggestions of the respondents concerning training
included : having more chances to attend training programs related to pollution resulting from using pesticides and integrated pest control management that include practical training and using audio visual aids.
